Joseph "Joe" Botts was raised on a large ranch in the coastal foothills of central California where ranches of several thousand acres were common and the neighbors were few and far between. He attended a grammar school that was over twenty miles away and there were only three students in his graduating class. It was a ninety mile round trip to high school and he was unable to attend college on a regular basis, so most of his academic achievements and credentials are from correspondence courses.
The people and the places of his youth provided him with a rich background that was often filled with high adventure. He knows what it was like to ride bucking horses and herd thousands of cattle, farm thousands of acres with old equipment, and to see our military go from horse drawn canons to high flying aircraft.
The old cowboys and vaqueros that he rode and worked with, told him of things in their past that go back into the mid 1800s.
The world has changed a lot, so much of what he writes about will never happen again. That is why he feels it is his duty, as well as his pleasure, to share those true stories and adventures with others while he can.
THE SHERIFF OF SAN LUCAS is his first novel, and even here, he uses actual locations so real it can be followed on a map and bases his characters on people he has actually known.
