Joseph, overseas on assignment as the assassin known as Fury, gets word that Ember is in trouble and looking for him. The memories of the one girl who knew him only as her Joey has him on his way to her, in spite of the injuries from his current job, and in spite of his conscience telling him that he's no longer that young boy and she represents everything he can never have.
Thank you, Kris Michaels, for a heroine who's no wilting hothouse flower waiting for rescue, but a strong, feisty, independent woman who can keep it together in a crisis. And thank you for no "insta-love," but a couple with a past history who have grown into completely different people but still connect to each other. Personally, my only issue was after all those years, Joseph's environment has turned his desires much more dark than anyone would guess, and Ember, remembering only the young man from high school, was extremely accommodating when faced with his true sexual nature.Read more ›
I was sent this book as an ARC for my honest review which I will give without spoilers.
Joseph is the second book in the Kings of Guardian Series, I did not read the first book, though I did find it was not necessarily required for this book. This story revolved around Joseph King and Dr. Ember Harris. These two had a past, they were inseparable their senior year of high school. He fascinated her, he protected her. They both knew once they graduated, they would each go their separate ways, Joseph to the Marines and Ember to medical school. For Ember, no one compared to Joseph. The life that Joseph led did not allow him to find love. They each are living alone and lonely.
Tragedy strikes and Ember needs the protection she knows only Joseph can provide her with. Can these two high school sweethearts find the love they once shared? Do they find their happy ever after amongst danger and intrigued? Or have they missed out on their chance to be in each other lives again?
I could not find fault with the writing or story Kris Michaels presented to her readers. The pace of the story moved along nicely though a couple times I felt it did drag a bit. There was drama and mild angst. No big plot twist or surprise was presented to the reader. For me, I saw the ending before it happened and I believe others will also be expecting it. The secondary characters were interesting and added to the plot, setting up for future stories. While I was not blown away with Joseph, I personally do not have any objections or critiques to the author. I might add that if I had started with the first book, I might have been more invested in the characters. I would recommend readers to start at the beginning to get the full effect of the story, however, it is not required.
Emotional, full of action, drama and tension, this story was everything I’d hoped it would be.
Ember Harris is embarking on a new life adventure but not the one she planned for. Walking away from her high-stress job as an emergency room doctor, she planned to take a step back and smell the roses before figuring out what’s next. What she didn’t expect was to reconnect with the one man in her entire life who gave her a sense of safety and belonging. Or to do it as she feared for her life…
Joseph King knew what he did was violent and abhorrent but necessary in this chaotic world. He also couldn’t help but remember Ember – he never forgot his high school sweetheart. He knew he couldn’t have a wife – a family – with his profession. He didn’t feel he deserved one. When she called though he moved heaven and earth to be there for her…
This is the second in the series but the first for me. All I can say is, hold onto your hats as the ride is fast and very bumpy. And emotional. And a beautiful romance despite the chaos surrounding them both. Joseph is protective and alpha all the way. He didn’t think he could save the world and take something, someone, for himself. He was going to be proved wrong.
“The one time in her life she felt safe, wanted and loved was when she dated Joseph.”
Ember has a core of steel that allows her to save lives and do what needs to done, despite the circumstances. Underneath those matter of fact exteriors, however, are hearts that simply recognize their soulmates.
“You better love her while you can. My mom once told me life isn’t about the millions of breaths you take. It’s about the individual moments that take your breath away.”
I loved this story and the people in it.Read more ›
