Joseph Mark Brewer spends his days with fiction and non-fiction competing for his attention. On the one hand, he creates worlds set in places where he has lived. On the other hand, he has spent almost forty years as a journalist and editor. Both pursuits stem from a childhood where words, geography, history and travel were an integral part of his life.
A middle child in a large family that valued education, he studied art and music in high school and won a scholarship to study voice and composition. But his interest in travel and writing prevailed. Leaving music school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a journalist and spent the next four years on sea duty, serving on ships that would allow him to visit more than 40 cities around the world. His three years based in Japan was the foundation of an interest in the country that continues today.
When he isn't working in daily journalism, he writes and edits fiction and non-fiction. He is the author of the Shig Sato mystery series and the upcoming Tom Becker, Bounty Hunter series, and the editor of two books of non-fiction biography. Most of the time he can be found reading domestic and international novels, short stories and flash fiction in traditional and non-traditional form; traveling with his son to sporting events, or watching classic and foreign films, especially those from Japan.
