I actually don’t need this many flies, so I made the next cultures with less media and water. They’re working well also! Most important tip is to water them when they need it, and be sure to keep the cup in a cool, dark area of your house if possible.
One complaint is that the cups are pretty thin, so working with them without the cup folding in can be tricky until you get used to it. Once you open and close them a few times, this gets much easier. Smooth sailing from there :) I am making myself new cultures every two weeks for consistent fly availability. You may want to do more depending on how many flies your creatures need, but that’s plenty for me.
Update: (photo with both cups). I’m writing this on 10/20/21. I can confidently say that you do not need the 1/2 cup they say to use. The left is my second culture made with 1/4 the amount in the instructions (2 tablespoons of dry media, 1.5 ounces water), less excelsior, less flies. I meant to produce less flies because I don’t need that many, but I failed because this one is also booming just as much as my first one. This stuff definitely works.
Update 10/31/21, photo with 9/25 cup: my second batch with 1/4 the amount as directed did not turn out as well in the long run. It is producing just fine, but adult flies have died more quickly in the container. I'm preparing another batch today with 1/2 the amount (1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons and 3oz water) and lots of excelsior. While I do not need that many flies to feed, it’s annoying to get dead flies when you tap them out. Also I have to say that the flimsiness of the cups has been fine once cooled down, but when you first pour the boiling water in there, it’s way too easy to crunch up when you put the lid on.

The cultures are also very easy to make, and the kit comes with instructions. I am happy that I no longer have to pay 10-15 dollars for a fruit fly culture. I can now make them myself for only a few dollars each.
Great product, will buy again.
