At first I was hesitant because it seemed a bit pricey just to grow fruit flies. Boy was I wrong. Three weeks after seeding my first container I have a healthy culture of melanogaster numbering in the thousands. The containers are sturdy and the lids fit snugly and provide ample airflow with zero escapees. The substrate seems to be very effective at holding moisture, providing nutrition and warding off mold. I now have some very happy fish with a constant supply of living food. Will definitely purchase again when I make my last culture from this kit.

Good Value - Add More Water Than Suggested.

So I love the price point and that it is a total kit for breeding basically ( byof as in bring your own flies).
That said, I find I definitely needed more water than what package suggested and that led to some panic as I was mixing batches and also each ended up different because my pre measurements didn't add up to working sets. Next batches I'll add more water lol. That aside, these took longer to produce flies than my repashy super fly medium did. Also, getting less flies. Not a huge deal as I made enough cups but just a heads up.

Overall, can't beat value for money. Just use more water or have it ready and also make 1 extra fly cup for every 2 that you need. Like, if you need 2 cups of flies, make 3 containers instead.

We had done the whole tadpole-to-frog thing… with 36 tadpoles. The frogs that initially developed were so small that it was recommended that i buy flightless fruit flies from a pet store. Never knew there was such a thing. Then I got tired of spending money on jar after jar of flies so I decided to buy this kit and multiply them myself. Good thing I had a crop to start them in the containers. Making this was easy, and I think we had a good amount in about 14 days. Mold grew for sure after a while. I didn’t like that the culture remained runny over time. Because it didn’t harden, sometimes some of it would run out of the cup and into the aquarium as I fed my frog. The tadpole/frog journey: Over time, either the tadpoles ate the frogs or the frogs ate the tadpoles. Now I am left with one frog and I went back to the store to buy another container. He’s still not growing that big yet to feed him crickets.

I may change my rating of 4 stars in the future, but right now I can't say much because I just started my culture today (March 16, 2017).
The reason I only give it 4 stars now is 3 fold.

1] The powder seems to be simply an apple cinnamon instant powdered oat packet, maybe with something else sprinkled in.
2] The cups are frosted and not clear like I wanted, which maybe good for fruit flies, but I like to see clearly what's going on inside.
3] The lids are drilled with micro holes but I wanted fabric mesh with large holes to breathe.

I will follow up this review when I learn more. I want to see if his culture breeds more than my homemade culture.
I put a lot of love and attention into my homemade culture, so lets see the results in a couple of weeks and I will
get back to you.

Follow up #1:
The lids do not fit the cups without applying a lot of pressure.
I bought this kit for the 10 cups and lids and to try out the culture.
So far, the cups and lids fail the test of being nice.
The lids require so much pressure to close that you might crush the cup
while doing so.

I'm going to lower my review from 4 stars to 2 stars because of this.
The 10 cups and lids are now a big problem to me with this product.
I will follow up later with the results from the culture.
My review may climb back up to 3 stars, but never 5 because of these cups and lids.

Edit 3/27/2017: My fruit flies love this mix.
This stuff is simple and easy.
I am getting both Meloganaster and Hydie reproducing in this mix.
In separate cultures.

I give it 4 stars now because the mixture is nice.
I don't like the cups, but maybe you will.

I’m a novice here. Caught a 2” house gecko in my condo to release but was so tiny. Trial & error he’s growing with Malanagaster fruit flies. $10 for a cup crashed 1 month & had to by another. I realized the original had loads of larvae so bought Joshes culture kit to keep the food coming. Mix was great & no fuss. I’m in desert so no mold or problems. Got a new colony now & will keep it going til he’s big enough for small crickets. Thx Josh! 😘
