Using the Culture
How to Feed Flies:
Tap the top of the container so that the Fruit Flies will fall to the bottom. Then remove the lid, and shake the Fruit Flies into the feeding container. Don't forget to dust fruit flies with a quality calcium and multivitamin supplement to ensure optimal nutrition for your pets!
How to Feed Larvae:
High in fat, fruit fly larvae are a great emergency feeder.
Getting the fruit fly larvae is super easy. Grab a spoon and scoop the top of the media in the culture making sure to also scrape the sides a bit. When you pull out the spoon you should see small white larvae scooting around in the media.
This media spoon can be held out for frogs to feed from.
How to Store:
For optimal production, Josh's Frogs Fruit Fly Cultures should be kept at 75-78F and 60-80%. When Hydei are kept at too warm of a temperature, their offspring can mutate and regain the ability to fly.
Lifespan
- If kept properly, these cultures will produce for at least 2 weeks!
Culturing from Home
Josh's Frogs also provides all the supplies needed to make more cultures at home, both as kits and singly.

It's been over a month since my flies arrived and the culture is still producing hundreds. I popped a pencil sized hole in the top that I keep closed with tape. When I feed my mantis nymphs, I just pull off the tape, tilt the container, and tap gently. Like seasoning, except it crawls.

Josh's is one of, if not my favorite supplier. I buy a lot from them from animals and plants to a lot of supplies and feeder insects. I have to say though the fruit fly cultures are terrible. I have ordered them several times. I think I got "acceptable" cultures twice. Every other time the containers have arrived in terrible condition. The soupy media has obviously rolled around the containers and coated any pupae completely. The air holes at the top of have media coming through them and there are maggots that have come through the holes and are crawling on the top of the container. The excelsior is completely saturated with media and there are no live flies to be seen in the container so I can't even seed fresh media. There are a few maggots I can see crawling around in the very liquidy media but rarely do these do anything. I wish I could write something better here but its been a disaster buying these and a big waste of money. Until they work out a more stable and dependable shipping method I would rather buy small cultures and seed my own media or in an emergency buy try to buy from someone else.

Prior to leaving this 1 star review I contacted Josh's Frogs three times. The last email response has made me decided to NEVER purchase anything from Josh's Frogs again. Years of doing business with them and the response was basically "too bad, looks ok to me". Good business would have been to just send a new culture. There is not ONE FF in this, the larvae are covered in medium, after having it for 24 hours it is turning black. I want a refund!
*** Josh's Frogs made good on this item so I am updating them to 3 stars. I appreciate them making good on a bad delivery but as a customer I should not have to send numerous emails and photo's to have it corrected. The original culture was thrown away. The new culture that arrived was perfect.

I decided to copy and paste a previous buyers response because it is EXACTLY what I was going to write. I have purchased Dart Frogs, Mourning Gecko's, plants, culture supplies, crickets, FFC, Butter Worms, Vivarium supplies, etc. Never again will they get any of my money.

The flies came in mixed up and dead. called customer service. Two different customer service girls and they behaved as if i were annoying them, barely answered a question and overall unpleasant. Ive ordered from Josh's in the past through their website and Amazon. No more. customer service is as important as the product. since both have failed they've lost me.

This wingless fruit fly culture came with many fruit flies in eggs about to hatch, and once they hatched it was crawling with them. We used this to feed praying mantises that we hatched from egg sacs (also from Josh's Frogs). The flies can't fly but they crawl very fast and can jump pretty high (adaptation due to lack of wings I would guess). The easiest way I found to take out just a few of them for feeding the praying mantises was to lay the container on its side in the fridge for about 30 minutes or an hour to chill it down. (Make sure you lay it on its side, otherwise they can get stuck in their food when they become stationary.) At the same time, I put a small plate in the freezer. The flies will slow down to the point where you can just shake out a few onto the chilled plate. They will stay still long enough for handling. You can use a paint brush to push a few into the jar with the praying mantises and after a short time (usually seconds) they warm up and start walking around. You can also try using your fingers if you're gentle but you need to be quick because it will warm them up pretty quickly and then they'll start jumping away. The first batch of flies produced more eggs and I believe those flies produced another batch of eggs, so I think we got three generations of flies from this culture.

When I opened the box the container was just rolling around inside. The medium was all over, a huge mess, it had dried in the lid covering all the air holes. No adult flies, and so far nothing hatching. The medium looks like it's growing mold. Other places I have ordered from took the time and effort to secure the container in the box and marked the box with arrows to keep the container upright and the flies arrived a live. I will not order from here again. Extremely disappointed. This was a huge waste of money!
