That being said, I have to admit I was disappointed upon receiving the 2015 edition. Oh, the historical information, as noted, is beyond compare, but the previous "Journal" book - for 2014 - has not only the words that brings history to life, but was illustrated with lavish photographs, maps, and paintings that brought the past vividly to my living room and accented the text beautifully.
I'm not sure why the 2015 edition wasn't published to that standard (hence the 4 stars instead of 5), but I certainly hope 2016's will be.
Either way, this book is a must have for both the casual reader as well as for the accredited historian. Our early American history needs to brought back out to the forefront, and Andrlik & Company are just the folks to do it.
However.... I was a little shocked when it arrived and it was the size of a normal hardcover book. The inside is set up and written just like a regular book with just a few photographs, charts and other supporting documents. One of the things I loved about the first one is the high quality reproduction and presentation. It felt special, it provided an interesting presentation, it came alive off the pages without it being a website, app or digital book. It's something that I actually still keep on the end table in my den. This one, I will read from cover to cover and it will go on a shelf with my other books. It's missing a little something. I wish their was a happy medium somehow that balanced the two.
5 stars for content! This is a great collection of well-researched and carefully footnoted essays on various aspects of the Revolutionary War. I especially like the way the essays are arranged in a reasonably chronological order which makes the book both interesting and effective as a teaching tool.
I have subtracted one-star for the layout and graphic design of this book. More white space and breathing room for the eyes is needed. A few more black and white engravings, or better yet some colored photos of paintings, people and places, inserted at the beginning of each essay would help make this text-dense volume more appealing to the general reader.
If you are an American Revolution buff, you need this book in your collection. I am already looking forward to next year's annual edition!
In full disclosure, my article on the "Top Ten American Loyalist Officers" is included in the book. This article describes the oft omitted impact of loyalists officers and military units on major campaigns and battles. Some of these officers were as capable as their highly celebrated and remembered patriot counterparts and provided significant assistance to the British efforts to suppress the rebellion.
The book is especially relevant for those readers who seek to understand what it was like to have lived in revolutionary times!
