The pages are a little bit thicker than your average non-journaling bible so the pens i use (pilot G 2) don't actually bleed through but the pages do tend to be a bit translucent in a sense. meaning you can see the words printed in the bible or what you write but so far no bleeding of pens. i haven't used any highlighter yet; so, i don't know about those as of right now.
It has pretty awesome space for writing notes (which is what i bought mine for) as well as for drawings and doodles. though i do attend an art college i don't intend on using this bible for that. im sure some light watercolor washes even in a few layers wouldn't hurt or damage or bleed through if done lightly and gently and with patience. colored pencils would definitely be best. or pilot pens and thin point micron pens would probably do well.
My only complaint at the moment would be that the words spoken by Jesus are not in red or anything but i can always highlight those in a separate color.
I am going to be carrying this on me frequently if not all the time; so, i plan to get a cover to keep it in a nicer condition. i definitely recommend a cover for the "pleather" or fake leather soft cover bible especially if running around all over the place and sometimes shoving it in your school bag whatever it may be.
