It was an interesting look at life on a plantation back in the 1800's. The content that discussed slavery and the conditions they were subjected to was difficult to read. It is hard to understand how inhumane slave owners were and yet, curiously it also helped clarify how difficult the whole system of slavery was. Feeding and clothing, in some cases, hundreds of people was a challenge. This woman's husband and the slave owners in the area seemed to struggle to provide for the number of slaves they had which I'm sure made their situation even worse. I found myself irritated with the author and her inability to change the slaves' situation while at the same time realizing there wasn't much she could do given her position. It was frustrating to read. There was a bit too much narrative concerning the flora and fauna of the area which I found myself skipping over towards the end of the book. Overall, it provided a new perspective for me and I'm glad I decided to read it.

A sad account from another outlook

This is records from a southern white woman trapped in a marriage and a situation she wanted hated. She witness some of the horrible treatment of the slaves on her husband's plantation. She lost respect for the man she married. She tried to help the women get better care. Stupidity of the men who wanted to breed more slaves however they kept food, clean conditions, clothing and medical help from both the woman and their children. Many babies and young children died from negligent care and unhealthy living. Woman suffered from the physical abuse of having to work long hard hours in the fields during pregnancies and be told the were malingering after giving birth. Many had infections and other health problems that could have been prevented or cured. The wife eventually just had to leave. The struggle with her husband who backed the overseer over the conditions and treatment of the slaves became fruitless and unbearable. I would have liked to actually read her diary rather than just excerpts.

Insightfull narative

An educated woman of her time she saw the injustices of her situation and although she could do little to change the culture, she was able to alleviate some of the misery of individuals for a short time only. Having been extricated from this evil she intended to speak out in what ever way possible once she was in a position to do so. It changed nothing at that time but she was one of the first to corroborate descriptions in the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin". In today's climate it would have been a sensational Documentary if not a great expose in a Northern Paper of the time. With an intelligent style of writing I was able to understand the inner conflicts it brought her. Her courage in confronting some of the Taboos, was commendable.

The accounts of the women that this lady helped is heartbreaking and a terrible crime that it even existed. Due to the time this happened white plantation women had little power to change the treatment of women slaves. You can't imagine what it must have been like to be a black slave women and survive grueling labor, continually pregnant, having few of the children you love survive, and not given time to recover after delivery before going back to hard labor. Well documented.

What a remarkable woman, that Fanny Kemble Butler! I read this while conducting more in-depth research into slavery while writing my novel, The Secrets of Heavenly She offered insights that were not common knowledge, and gave me a more complete picture of the horrors of slavery in the United States. For instance, slaves often had their own medical facilities in which to treat illness amongst their people. Sounds fairly humane, right? Wrong. These infirmaries were scarcely more than ramshackle rooms with inadequate or non-existent supplies, rooms that merely contained the sick to one germ-ridden environment to die, thus limiting the spread of their diseases among the healthier slave "stock". Additionally, Fanny noted the filthy appearance of even the slaves who were chosen to work in the Master's "Big House". She felt that it was terribly inhumane not to allow slaves access to proper hygiene.

As the wife of an American slave-holder, Fanny set out to bring humanity onto their plantations. Unfortunately though, her efforts to provide better living conditions on the plantation were challenged by her husband. He was enraged by her documentation of slave conditions and threatened to forbid her from seeing their daughters if she published them. Ultimately they were divorced and her tell-all book was printed. I view Fanny as an early heroine in the anti-slavery movement! Although this book is lengthy, it is a worthwhile and enlightening read.

I have read more than one book on slavery. This book is letters that a lady wrote to a friend after marrying and moving south with her husband to his plantation, and her exposure to real slavery in all its raw ugliness. Not a story looking back to slavery but seen through the eyes of someone who was right there at the time, appalled by what she was seeing and hearing. Very powerful I highly recommend it.

Several years ago I saw the movie Enslavement: The True Story of Fanny Kemble. It is a great movie.The movie prompted me to go to the Library and look up Fanny Kemble.I am 61 years old finished school in 1970.As a child in the segregated South our school books were old and outdated.I always said as a child I would study slavery and the plantation life while building my own Black History Library.I have done just that. Fannys' eyes were really opened when she arrived at Butler Plantation in Georgia.Her husband had told her The slaves were well fed and clothed and were real happy.Fanny had never known anything about slave life. She was reall shocked upon seeing the Butler Plantation!
