The key to the successful completion of any flight, whether a short-distance domestic flight or an ultra long-haul flight, is meticulous planning, timely preparation, precise execution, and the crew’s ability to anticipate and cope with sudden changes. Every trip is unique. Some are more challenging than others and you can always count on last minute changes and surprises. For the most part, however, trips tend to be uneventful but never routine. Upon a successfully completed trip we derive a great sense of satisfaction knowing that we completed it safely, effectively, and efficiently (in that order of importance).What follows is a four-sector westbound trip around the world in a Gulfstream G650ER. This particular trip underscored the immense value of a business jet in optimizing high level executives’ productivity. Ivan Luciani is a corporate pilot who has logged over 12,000 flight hours flying around the world, and whose aviation career currently spans thirty eight years. He has flown private and public transport operations in the Learjet 31/35A/36/55 series, Cessna Citation II, Dassault Falcon 50, Bombardier Challenger 601 and 605, Bombardier Global Express, Hawker 750/900XP, Gulfstream G450, G550 and, more recently, the G650.

In addition to being a captain he has also performed duties as Chief Pilot, Director of Flight Operations, Aviation Safety Manager, Line Training Captain, Manager of Flight Training, Airworthiness Flight Test pilot and Type/Instrument Rating Examiner (TRE/IRE).

He has also developed and conducted numerous ground training courses such as Crew Resource Management (CRM), Human Factors in Aviation, Cockpit Automation, Security Awareness, and Safety Equipment and Emergency Procedures (SEP).

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Science from Metropolitan State College and a Master’s degree with Aviation/Aerospace Operations and System Safety specializations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is the author of An Aviator’s Journey – Tales of a Corporate Pilot and Journey Around the World: a G650 pilot’s perspective.

For those who ever wondered how an aircraft actually is professionally flown around the world, this is your book.

Captain Luciani wrote a step-by-step description on how this is done in an advanced Gulfstream 650 jet aircraft.

This book is also important because it showcases how professionalism, accuracy and safety must combine when flying to destinations where your own aviation company does not have maintenance or a ground operations team waiting for you to solve all your problems.

Professional flying of the highest nature does exist beyond the airlines.

Ivan has taken great pains to write about his Journey Around the World. The minute details of the trip, gives you the feeling that you were with him in the cockpit, on this enduring journey.

It certainly involves a lot of hard work, dedication and teamwork at all levels, to make such a journey successful and uneventful.

The book gives an in-depth view of the amount of work involved by the crew in bizjet operations. I recommend this book for all crew who are involved in such operations.

Whenever we met, we always sat down and had a cup of coffee. Now I know where he developed the taste for it.
To all Corporate pilots if you haven’t read his first book “An Aviator’s Journey”, don't miss reading it.

Ivan and I have been friends since 1999. We both flew for the same boss. Ivan flew him around the world in his bizjet, and I flew the boss between Macau and Hong Kong in a helicopter, after he returned from his around the world trips.

This book is Ivan’s second book. If you haven’t read his first book “An Aviator’s Journey”, dont miss this one as well. Both good read and great insight to corporate flying.

As an airline pilot, I really enjoyed this book. Ivan gives excellent insight into the operational issues involved in planning and executing a challenging round-the-world flight, walking you through the steps he and his crew take to prepare for a flight, through to what happens after the last chock is is place. He also provides a bit of info about how the G650 works, and what a phenomenal aircraft it is! His writing style is very engaging, and throughout the entire book I felt like I was sitting right next to him in the flight deck. From an airline perspective, it was interesting to see how safety concepts such as briefings, threat and error management, and controlled rest are implemented in corporate aviation, as well as the level of involvement that the crew has in the different phases of flight. I walked away from this book with ideas about how I can improve my flying, and I am sure that, no matter what level of pilot you are, you, too, will find something of great use in these pages. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
