As the author points out, we as a nation are aging; people are living longer today, and medical technology has advanced to a point where it can keep us alive, but at an unexpected cost. I'd always thought that if you carried a Premium level of medical insurance that most of your catastrophic medical expenses would be covered, but have learned from Mrs. Sheveland experiences, that is not the case for a protracted illness.
Just when you think things have gotten as bad as they can for her family, another block of health issues arise. This is one of those books that once you come to know the characters, it's hard to stop reading. In a way, it's almost a mystery that is slowly revealed: Will her husband beat the odds, will their leaving the city to live in a travel trailer in rural America help with health issues?
"Journey of My Heart' is also a book of healing, how the author searched books stores to find literature dealing with grief resolution, her meetings with a grief counselor, journaling, her love of music, and the sometimes not so empathic advice from acquaintances. In the end, it a story of love, living "outside the box", survival, personal growth and the warm memories of a loving wife who fought for years to protect her husband and family.
