When the film was in post-production, producers called on famed veteran composer, Elmer Bernstein to score the film, however his score for some reason got rejected. Not long after that, a young but very talented and upcoming composer named James Horner was called in to write a replacement score for the film, and what the filmmakers got was something absolutely amazing! Mr. Horner at this point in his career had made a name for himself from scoring the 1982 film Star Trek II, and continued to score many more films after that. This score is beautiful; it has elements of Americana in it, and has a lyrical approach that makes it very elegant and dramatic. Personal favorite cues include; Main Title, Leaving, Freight Train, First Love, Farewell, and Reunion-End Title.
This score has been requested to be released by Horner fans for years and years, and in 2009, Intrada Records finally granted these wishes with a 2,500 copy limited edition of this fantastic score with the help of Horner himself and his longtime sound engineer and friend Simon Rhodes. If you are a Horner fan, a soundtrack collector, or a lover of great film music, I highly recommend this beautiful piece of orchestral scoring by one of Hollywood's greatest composers.
