To celebrate 80 years of Penguin Books, a charming picture book that tells the imagined story of the penguin who waddled his way into history as the symbol of a beloved publisher
A lonely Antarctic penguin, dreaming of adventure, sets off on a long swim north. Arriving at last in London in 1935, he encounters the chance of a lifetime: auditions are on to find the face of a brand new publishing house. The penguin wins, of course, and so begins an adventure that takes him on to New York and into the hearts of readers around the world.
In The Journey of the Penguin, award-winning graphic artist Emiliano Ponzi delivers a boldly illustrated, wildly imaginative, and terrifically fun story—told entirely through image—that brings to life the “dignified yet flippant” bird chosen eighty years ago by Allen Lane as the name and icon of his revolutionary publishing business. With cameo appearances by legendary Penguin authors including Jack Kerouac, Arthur Miller, and Dorothy Parker, this exquisite, one-of-a-kind book celebrates the enduring appeal of storytelling.

Geogrphical mistakes in the boom
This is quite misleading start of the story that a pinguin by default lives close to a polar bear. However in real world one lives on the South Pole and the other on the North. I do not think its nice to put this wrong misperception of basic geography in kids mind

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2019Well illustrated graphic novel suitable for any age reader with only a limit as to its brevity as a point of frustration. Those familar with Penguin Publishing clearly get more comic substance than a more naive reader may be able to obtain.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2018Can't wait to "read" it to my grandchildren. I love how there are no words. Perfect to encourage their own storytelling. Beautiful colors and images. LOVE LOVE LOVE

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2015A charming book (no words just illustrations) to celebrate Penguin's 80 years in publishing. With gorgeous illustrations we watch how the life on one Antarctic penguin is transformed as he makes his way across the continent to London back in 1935.
While his penguin friends shed a tear or two back home, the world traveler finds the opportunity of a lifetime as the icon of a brand new publishing house. With stunning pictures of glaciers (melting), sea life, Big Ben, palace guards, and adorable animals who are trying out for the leading role as well, the penguin in his top hat, steals the show. Not only does the penguin get the job, he even gets a private office complete with pictures on the wall of famous Penguin authors such as Arthur Miller, Jack Kerouac and Dorothy Parker.
A beautiful book to celebrate this special occasion - Penguin's 80 years in publishing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2016I loved the illustrations! The graphics and illustrations were eye catching, vibrant, and modern. I loved them! The main penguin in the book was so sweet and had an adorable face! I loved looking for the penguin in all the different scenes. My personal favorites were the London ones and Antarctica.
Because the book has no words you as the reader can kind of make up your own story based on the pictures. The picture gives a generic idea of what’s going on but I personally had fun creating my own little story to fit scene. In my mind I was thinking it would be a fun book to read to little kids and kind of create a little story or let the kid create a story with you as you are reading together.
In some ways I was hoping there could have been a few words to kind of frame the story but overall I was satisfied with the flow of the ‘story’ and it challenged me as a book reviewer to enjoy a story without words!
I especially love the cameo appearances of Arthur Miller, Jack Kerouac, and Dorothy Parker……that was fun to see.
If you are looking for a fun book to share with your kids or a fun little picture book about how the charming mascot came to be then book fits the bill. The illustrations are on point and so colorful….you won’t be disappointed!
