Then there’s the self-help aspect, which prospective parents will definitely find useful (and yes, even prospective heterosexual parents as well). A recurring theme in the various stories is that there were so few resources from which to draw as these families were created. Well, now there’s a single book that is fairly comprehensive when it comes to what to expect and plan for when considering five different approaches to having children. The details might need to be hammered out on a case-by-case basis, but there are universal truths to consider and steps to be taken with each approach.
This book is of course geared towards prospective LGBT parents but there are lessons to be learned even by heterosexual couples or individuals planning to have children. There is one word that applies to almost all of the parents in this book as they created their families, “responsible”. As LGBT’s, we can’t have children as an after thought. We need to work hard and plan thoroughly to have our children. Books like this are one more tool to help us responsibly create our families.
So whether you just want to read inspiring, touching, and funny human interest tales, or want advice as you plan for your own family, this book is a must have.
Thank you, Eric, for working so hard to make this possible.
Eric Rosswood did an amazing job! When my husband and I decided it was time to start a family, we had very few resources to tap into, especially being a same-sex couple. This book is something that we both wish was available during our process. Journey To Same-Sex Parenthood provides you with facts, tips and countless inspirational stories about all the trials, tribulations and celebrations that come with all avenues of starting a family; open or closed adoption, foster-parenting, surrogacy, and so on. This is a must read for anyone who my be thinking of starting their own journey or for those in your life that are too!
With that said and having now read the entire book, I think Eric Rosswood did a marvelous job. I really do wish a book like this existed when my partner and I were originally considering our options for family building.
It is very well organized into five sections covering different paths to parenthood for same sex couples: Open Adoption, Foster Care, Surrogacy, Assisted Reproduction, and Co-Parenting. Each section includes multiple representative firsthand stories by gay and lesbian people that went through it themselves. Each story takes you on an emotional roller coaster toward parenthood that keeps your attention while at the same time informing you of the highs and lows that may occur along the way. I think that same sex couples hoping to have children will have better understanding of practical issues, but especially the emotional complexities that come with each approach after reading these personal stories. Other books may focus on a single approach, or read more like a clinical manual. This book is warm and intimate.
For the detail oriented, the end of the book comes complete with multiple appendices that comment on legal issues, benefits and challenges, and questions to ask yourself when considering each of the five different paths to parenthood.
