Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With the same level of enthusiasm that animates her Tales of the Cryptids (2006), Halls presents a gallery of mummified children. They range from one mummy discovered near Chile's Camarones Valley--at roughly 7000 years old, the most ancient human mummy known--to an unidentified Washington, D.C., teenager found in an elaborate Civil War-era casket in 2005. Along with a generous selection of rousing, eerie color photos, the author offers sensitive speculations about these once-living children's lives and deaths, interviews with scientists and mummy hunters, and telling details, such as the fact that King Tut's body was literally ripped apart to extract the valuables secreted in its wrappings. Closing with a visit to a modern embalmer and exemplary multimedia resource lists, this will keep readers rapt (so to speak) from cover to cover. John Peters

Format: Hardcover
I admit that I first felt this book was frightening and gruesome. However, as you read it, you become more engaged and interested. The author does a very good job of being respectful to the mummies and the people they used to be. I use this book in my classroom with advanced 5th grade readers and they love it. Some are nervous at first (as I was) but soon realize the science and compassion behind what is written. My lower readers will even beg to read it because it is so intriguing. The author truly does a good job of being a caring presenter of what could be very difficult material.

My 6-year-old is typically easily scared, but she found this book at the library and wanted to check it out. It was 2 weeks before she had the courage to open it, but she quickly became fascinated by the stories within. Fantastic book, great pictures, lots of concise details given. Written on the level of an 8-12 year old. Now we're buying our own copy.

This is a great little book! Lots of great quality images of mummies from around the world. The text is informative with out being too detailed, I would put an reading level of about 10 years old on this one (though I am 38 and just wanted it for my collection). I especially love the chapters devoted to the Mummies of South America (Chile in particular). Really interesting casual read, with beautiful full color images I also recommend Bodies From The Bog - James Deem, for similar format, image quality and reading level.
