Jovial Organic Einkorn Wheat is THE BEST! The pasta, too, is fabulous!
A word to Jovial and to readers. When you buy GMO, you are actually only buying the right to the consume the product. You have no ownership over the seed unless expressly purchased. In the case of this non-GMO hereditary product, you do actually gain ownership over the seeds and the ability to plant them. Jovial - you do not have the right to destroy the seed by crushing in order to prevent me from growing this wheat. you do not possess the right to stop future generations of this wheat, nor the right to prevent me from consuming it in the form that i'd like - namely, as sprouts. Vita-spelt does the same thing to its whole spelt kernels, and both companies ought to be ashamed. You are benefiting from millennia of hardworking farmers who preserved these seeds from antiquity, and the mere fact that you now selling it does not give you exclusive rights over the reproduction of those seeds. That credit belongs to the farmers who had the foresight to preserve and protect ancient seed varieties.
As far as this $9.00 box it is useless. I cannot use these lifeless kernels for sprouts and now they are good only as chicken feed.
First impression: the boiled wheat berries (cooked al dente) would be an excellent substitute for ground meat in chili recipes. The mild flavor, complementary texture and good nutrition make these berries an important addition to the family cupboard. For use in chili, prepare the sauce and berries separately, then simmer together for 15 minutes before serving.
January 2015 update:
How time flies! Six boxes of Einkorn Berries (still in the shipping container) were stored in a closet for over a year; I had drifted back to a favorite staple: organic short grain brown rice. Recently, an impromptu combination created an instant "must have more often": 1 1/2 cups Berries (cooked as directed, then refrigerated overnight), 1 1/2 cups diced sweet onion, 1/2 cup diced fresh parsley, juice of 1/2 lemon, salt & pepper as desired, plus 2/3 cup Newman's Olive Oil & Vinegar Dressing.
I finally discovered the Wheat Berry Salad recipe on the box, but prefer this simpler combination - serve as a main dish with cherry tomatoes, diced cucumbers, and tasty cubes of cheese on the side.

Good quality, but pricey. Works well is salads or with hot tomato sauce as one would do pasta. A nice subtle grainy taste.Published 3 months ago by Beth & Jean
