Top customer reviews
The case is a snap case with two clasps, one at the top and one at the bottom (which covers the charging port). The earphone jack is plugged with a rubber flap. It doesn't seem too secure, but it'll do for light duty waterproofing. (Edit: 2 months in, I pulled the rubber flap a bit too hard one too many times, and it tore right off. Stuck it back on with super glue and it works fine again. So, be careful!) There's a hole on the top right of the case, for attaching a mobile strap (which comes free with the case!). I don't use one because my phone gets wet often, and the strap isn't waterproof.
Fits well, slim, sturdy and snug. Less give than the Fre, when you twist or otherwise apply torque to the case. The edges of the case do come up all the way to the very edge of the screen though, so it can be difficult to access buttons and things along the screen edge. I also find that lint and dust tend to get stuck in the various crevices where the case meets the screen, and where the front half meets the back half. The case is very, very tight! Once you snap it on, it's very difficult to get it off again. So, make sure there is no grease/dust/anything on your phone before fastening the case.
- Screen protector
The screen protector feels much more snug on the screen than the Fre. The clarity is also stunning. Compared to the Fre, it's like not having a screen protector at all. Upon really close inspection, I could still see a tiny gap between the plastic and the screen, but for all intents and purposes, it really makes no difference. Unlike the Fre, the screen also remains very sensitive, even when wet (not when soapy though).
- Touch ID
The touch ID is also way more sensitive than the Fre's. With this case, it works 9/10 times (the other 1 time is probably when my finger is wet). With the Fre, it worked maybe only 50% of the time, if even that.
The sound quality is also much better than with the Fre. The case does muffle the speaker sound, but not to an unacceptable degree (Fre case = unacceptable muffling). However, the microphone doesn't work so well with this case. I found that I had to practically yell when I am speaking on the phone. I've decided to just use headsets for phone conversations from now on.
Speaking of headsets, the hole for the earphone jack is very narrow. It will take standard iPhone earbuds without a problem, but fatter, or L-shaped jack plugs will not fit. You'll have to get an adapter for those (and I'm not sure those even exist, as I haven't needed one).
Appearance-wise, this is much better looking than the Fre. Both my female colleague and my boyfriend immediately commented on how pretty it was. The shape is nice and curvy, not boxy.
I also really like the diamond air pockets on the back of the phone. They look interesting, feel interesting (I like squishing them), help to create friction so your phone doesn't slide off smooth surfaces, and cushion the impact of falls. The white option might not have been the best idea though, because the plastic diamonds are starting to yellow slightly.
I'm a very clumsy person, so ruggedness is very important to me. My aero-engineering friend was very impressed by the MILSTD 810G rating, which apparently means it is very, very rugged. And 1 month in, it has held up well. When dropped, it doesn't scratch or chip as easily as the Fre. Even the screen protector is resistant to scratches.
All in all, a great case. I would gladly overlook the shortcomings for the superior performance in other aspects. At $45, it costs half as much as the Fre, but performs twice as well.
FYI, this is a quick overview of my typical phone use:
- Drops from 1m at least once a week, sometimes several times a day.
- Washing with water and soap once a day.
- Reading in the shower once/twice a day, scrolling with wet hands.
I actually returned this thing five times (I was hoping one of them would finally good) but they just kept snapping in half. I got fed up and finally just got the much heavier, much uglier but importantly functional life proof case. No problems with the life proof except it sucks for sound transmission and require a stupid adaptor for the recessed audio jack but whatever... It works. Which is more than i can say for this case.
Sigh. It's just such a shame. I really did want this case to be usable but fool me once, shame on you, fool me FIVE times - your product sucks.
Unfortunately, it was so tight on my phone that immediately upon getting the case semi-closed, my phone was asking if I wanted to "swipe to turn off". The buttons were being pushed automatically! I tried taking the phone out and putting it back in multiple different ways.... But still not one of the buttons would work once the case was closed. In sure it is definitely water tight, but I need to be able to use my phone.
It and "approved it". Just disappointing . Stick with your lifeproof or otter .....
