“The Joy of Fearing God, like its author, is a timeless classic. Years ago I led a group study of this unique book, and we all found it deeply refreshing and rewarding in our walks with Christ. I have the highest regard for Jerry Bridges, and I’m delighted to see one of his greatest books available for a new generation of readers!”
—Randy Alcorn, author of Heaven and Happiness
“Reading Jerry Bridges is like eavesdropping on an angel enraptured by adoration. He understands the fear of God as an awe-filled reverence before the divine majesty. This book will expand the mind and loose the soul to soar on high.”
—R. C. Sproul
“Only the fear of God has the power to disarm any other fear that would capture our hearts and control our lives. I am thankful that Jerry Bridges has written a book that defines and practically explains what the fear of God is all about and the beautiful effects it will have on our lives.”
—Paul David Tripp, pastor, author, and conference speaker
“Jerry Bridges has deeply plumbed and warmly written about the gospel for decades. This work, The Joy of Fearing God, is no different. The fear of God he writes of in his classic work is one of intense, joyous, intimate relationship with a sovereign God who, though He demands perfect obedience, has nevertheless opened wide his arms of welcome to sinners. It is because we are conscious of both our own sinfulness and His indescribable condescension and love that we run into His presence with worship and awe. I’m thankful for Bridges and his commitment to live ‘under the gospel’ every day. You will be too.”
—Elyse Fitzpatrick, author of Good News for Weary Women
“Joy and fear are not two words that usually go together. Jerry Bridges shows why they do—indeed, must—go together when it comes to our relationship with God. Drawing from deep wells of scriptural and historical reflection, Bridges introduces us to a God who amazes us with His power and woos us with His grace.”
—Trevin Wax, managing editor of The Gospel Project, author of Clear Winter Nights and Holy Subversion
“This classic from Jerry Bridges is the epitome of a journey book—the kind of book that isn’t content to skim the surface of truth, but one that takes us by the hand and leads us into the depths of the knowledge of God. It’s not merely about fearing God. It’s about who God is, about what he’s done in the gospel, and how we should live in the light of his reality.”
—Jonathan Parnell, lead pastor, Cities Church, Minneapolis–St. Paul

How influential should godly fear be in our daily lives? If we want to glorify God and desire to live for Him we must have knowledge of who God is and what He desires form us-Proverbs 1:7a 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge...'.-"It is the fear of the Lord that should determine our fundamental outlook on life."
The author contends that one of the principal parts of fearing God is obedience to His commands. One of the evidences that someone fears God is wholehearted submission to His Word-"...and it is a conscious obedience to God's commands as given in His Word that constitutes godly fear."
In the second section of this book Mr.Bridges considers aspects of who God is (some of His attributes-holiness,wisdom,love).One cannot fear an unknown god.The knowledge of God in His being and nature is the foundation of every doctrine. The greater one's knowledge of 'The Triune God',the more you will be enabled,by His grace,to walk in godly fear.We often try to categorize things to help us better understand them. Are any of God's attributes more important than the others? Bridges puts to rest that type of thinking with this assertion- "...we should not exact any of God's attributes above the others .All of them in their infiniteness, are essential to his being." To any who might not agree with this contention, what part of God's being or character could be removed, without un-deifying him?
Jerry Bridges 'The Joy Of Fearing God' along with A.N.Martin's 'The Forgotten Fear' are two of the most helpful books,on this important Biblical teaching that have been published in our generation.
