By far superior to AAL's other releases!

First off, the mix is golden! The first album (Animals As Leaders) was pretty decent on the production side, but it lacked the punch of a bass guitar. The second album (Weightless) mix was pretty awful - all I could hear was the kick drum! However, the Joy of Motion is well rounded in the rhythm section and the guitars are well balanced in the mids and higher ends. I love Nolly's contribution (Bassist for Periphery), a lot of funk influences on this album (oh yeah).

Secondly, the song structures are a lot more listenable. The first album was absolutely mind-numbing, but at times a little over-whelming... like there wasn't enough space/ambiance to process the music, at least for me. The second album improved on this by adding an actual rhythm section (i.e. Javier and Navene) and by Navene adding a lot of electronic tracks to the music. I believe adding Garstka (His subtle ghost notes are superb) on drums, shifting emphasis to the rhythm guitar, and having actual bass tracks has dramatically improved the listen-ability factor for The Joy of Motion... Love it!!!

Thirdly, Ahhhh The groove!!! I can actually bob/bang my head to a lot of this stuff! Tracks like Lippincott, Another Year, Physical Education (Personal Favorite), Tooth and Claw all stand out to me.

Whether you're a fan of AAL, enjoy progressive metal, or you're into instrumental stuff get this album! NOW!!!

(Update) I guess there are a lot of disappointed "fans", dudes whining about how "forgettable" this album is. This is progressive music!!! Why would I want to listen to something that sounded exactly like the last album or the album before? I love this album because it is different, yet still very much AAL!

I preordered the album after hearing the Tooth and Claw single, thinking it would be another hard hitting offering like their first album. The whole album was surprising from beginning to end.

They have stripped away some of the face melting and technicality in favor of tasteful melodic tracks like Para Mexer. And then you have your serious jams like Physical Education and Lippincott. This is such a fun album to play through, I highly recommend it for anyone both new Animals as Leaders fans and old.

Instrumental rock has always straddled a creative fence - pure music with egos in check on one side, and masturbatory wanking on the other side. Thus, because of the more prevalent wanking music out there, many stay away from it altogether, and that's a shame because when it's done right, it's cosmic.
Which brings us to Animals as Leaders' third opus, "The Joy of Motion". Led by possibly the most exciting and innovative guitarist out there today, Tosin Abasi, who is truly the heir to Jeff Beck's sense of melody and delicacy, we get a sound journey so full of color and texture it's mind boggling. Abasi is so brilliant he can shred with ease, and yet on quieter material practically redefine what fusion will be for all time. It's a tip of the hat to past innovators while channeling the future, a tech savvy but equally unique melodic sense that frankly must be heard to be believed, so gender smashing this amazing man.
"The Joy of Motion" is a bit more in the vein of the debut "Animals as Leaders", meaning it's not as bombastic as "Weightless" is in places. That's a matter of taste, because even when they do blast out, it's still fascinating.
As per the previous reference to Jeff Beck, my guitar hero, no higher compliment can be paid. Beck revolutionized rock and invented the heavy rock sound that Led Zeppelin quickly adopted, went the jazz fusion route with a string of brilliant albums, and still records astonishing music today. Tosin Abasi is the most innovative player in decades, and as his band gains followers, his star will rise to shine with the greats, and in fact it already does for AAL fans. You want to know what heavy music will sound like in fifty years? With a touch of jazz class and power that would rival any djent (I hate that word) band? Get this CD and play it in 2064. It will still be fresh.

Very thoughtful metal/jazz fusion, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. For me the jazzy tracks are a particularly refreshing departure from the doom and gloom djent vibe which pervades this genre. Happily still no words to ruin the music, here's to AAL and STS maintaining instrumental purity going forward.

I just discovered this guy on the Generation Axe tour with Steve Vai,,he was solid and clean,, playing on an 8 string guitar
More a free form almost Jazz style, but very interesting listening, especially if you play the guitar.

Unreal. I friggin love this band and the music they're putting out. This is not in-one-ear-out-the-other music. Your brain actually tries to take it in, almost decipher what it's hearing. Their earlier releases elicited the same kind of critical listening that you really don't do with most rock or metal music. I listen to this as if trying to figure it out, trying to see if there's some hidden code that's going to teach me something amazing. All it teaches me is that there are some incredible musicians out there who are extremely capable of putting pen to paper and doing something very unique and special on their instruments. This is the kind of band where you eagerly anticipate what's next and then ravenously devour what you're hearing. I imagine that this is a band and music that people who are into this sort of thing will never tire of it. And I would bet some people who never thought they'd be into this kind of music would hear this & be instant fans.
