Editorial Reviews

Joy is Now features compelling duets and kirtan call-response between GuruGanesha and Snatam Kaur, whose unforgettable voices create a counterpoint of masculine and feminine, strength and sweetness, earth and ether.

For those familiar with Snatam Kaur Khalsa, especially her 'Live' DVD .. or maybe you've caught her on YouTube, you know who GuruGanesha Singh is, and he's fantasic!

These two teamed up to make this album, and if you liked her 'Live' DVD, and can't get enough of GuruGanesha Singh, then this album is what you've been waiting for. It's spiritual, and it rocks!!

For those unfamiliar with what this duo is all about, I'll clue you in. It's not just 'New Age'.. no, such a generic umbrella term is really not accurate: this music is based on Sikh Gurbani, Kirtan, and Sikh Mantras (as in SIKHISM ;-)for example Mul Mantra is a recurrent theme.. but like no 'mantra' you've ever heard, forget what you think.. beautiful vocals, harmonizing, instrumentals.. layers of sophistication here, like being in an exotic cathedral with acoustic and percussive rhythms taking you away..

Snatam Kaur, in particular, adds just the right flavor and compliment, and it must have been a challenge for both her and Guru for her NOT to dominate the vocals with her ethereal "Gift from God!" voice. Again, those who know her work, know exactly what I'm talking about.. if you've never listened to any of Snatam Kaur's previous work, I highly recommend Shanti, Prem, or Anand to begin... your discovery of a phenomenal talent.

I find myself listening to 'Joy is Now' over and over.. my unscientific 'litmus test' .. so, it's 5 STAR all the way, thank you Snatam Kaur and GuruGanesha Singh, you've made some wonderful music that has enriched my life.

Satnam!

There is no doubt that Guruganesha Singh and the authentically innocent Snatam Kaur sing from the heart and produce a space of joy and beauty with their music. And they are accomplished musicians too, Ganesha an old hippie turned Sikh who cites Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia amongst his early guitarheroes.

On these 6 tracks - part mantras part devotional songs - they are helped by a vast array of musicians first and foremost renowned tabla player Manish Vyas and producer/multiinstrumentalist Thomas Barquee. With an added nice flavor from the use of trad. Indian instruments like sitar and sarod.

In the end it just turns out a little bit saccharine, drifting in to Deva Premal territory without the ecstasy and wildness that is inherent in trad. Indian kirtan or mantra singing.

I listen to a lot of Krishna Das music. This one is a nice change. It's very chill for Kirtan. It's great for singing along and it also makes for great background music when friends are over. I not a big fan of Ram Dass, but even the love song to him is great. If you're in to this type of music, this would be a fantastic addition to your collection.
