Joy is defined as the feeling you get when someone delights to be with you. God feels that way about us, but our brains have to be trained to respond. Lucky is the person who had healthy parents who instilled joy capability in them early. But it's not too late for the rest of us.
The only negative of the book is that, because it is written by four different authors, there are times when it seems redundant. Don't let that be a deterrent to reading the book.
It is also a bit pricy, but it includes assessments, a short Bible study and joy exercises with each chapter, along with lots of extra material in the Appendices. Worth every penny.
The scientific and relational components to joy are truly transformational. They are transformational to your individual life, to your immune system, to your physical body! As well as your relationships!
The exercises in this book are incredibly practical and easy to practice. While practicing these exercises in my own personal life and in my community I am seeing how they are revolutionizing the way I interact with everyone I encounter.
Who would have thought that God's will for us in all things "to give thanks" is so transformational! To practice thankfulness and to verbalized this in a genuine way to those around us brings JOY! I love this.
What can I say, if you are on the fence about spending the money to get this book I want to encourage you to invest the time and the money to get this book!! and to practice the exercises with those around you (not only in the study but in your relationships). I believe that it will truly bring yourself and your loved ones to a place of JOY.
This book is worth every penny.
I do wish there was a shorter more concise, simplistic version that could be used with groups that I run into in my community, lower functioning students or lower educated adults, or even folks that just aren't going to wade through longer chapters or exercises.
