Joyeux Noel captures a rare moment of grace from one of the worst wars in the history of mankind, World War I. On Christmas Eve, 1914, as German, French, and Scottish regiments face each other from their respective trenches, a musical call-and-response turns into an impromptu cease-fire, trading chocolates and champagne, playing soccer, and comparing pictures of their wives. But when Christmas ends, the war returns...Joyeux Noel has been justly accused of sentimentality, but if any subject warrants such an earnest and hopeful treatment, it's the horrors of trench warfare. The largely unknown cast--the more familiar faces include Diane Kruger (Troy), Daniel Bruhl (Good Bye Lenin!), Benno Furmann (The Princess and the Warrior), and Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot)--deliver low-key but effective performances as the movie dwells on the everyday elements of life in the face of war. Based on a true incident (though considerably fictionalized). --Bret Fetzer

Good movie, a little bit of "Hollywood" with Diane Kruger visiting the front lines, and the "trench switch" during the bombardment. The key in the story is the brotherhood of man and the failure of Christianity to overcome loyalty to states. In WW1 Germany was allied with Muslim Ottoman Turkey. This is reflected in the Scottish priest putting his cross of the plasma bottle. Also, the French Lieutenant killing the cockroach echoing back to Kubrick's "Path of Glory" when Ralph Meeker kills the roach in that great war film.

I have always loved the true story of this event since I first learned of it. This version is one of the most beautiful versions, taking poetic license, but still capturing the sense of what happened during that sad time yet wonderful day. Love this, so worthwhile for a holiday or anytime film. This is one that my family has added to each year as part of our holiday treasure films.

We have actually been to the spot where this movie takes place. It’s a wonderful film and it shows the humanity of the men in the trenches, and the inhumanity of war.

"War is hell" - credit is given to one man for that statement, but I'll guarantee that it's been said throughout the history of battle. Countries were at war, towns and fields were being ripped apart. On December 24, 1914 that all changed for a short period of time when peace fell across some of those frozen battlefields. This movie is brilliantly filmed and depicts Scottish, French, and German units at war until a temporary cease fire is called for the holiday. The men collect their fallen to bury them in the frozen ground and follow it up with a mass.

What one tends to forget unless they've been to war or have had loved ones in war; these "men" ranged from about 16-40 and generally fought with their siblings and best friends from home. One of the characters depicts the absolute heartbreak, despair, and inability to separate his anger from the truce quite well after his brother has been killed. The characters are superb; they depict exactly what I see in the men I grew up with (I'm a military brat from the States whose father served during OIF/OEF). They are not soul-less beings; they are playful, thoughtful, intelligent, connected, hurt, disconnected, and everything in between.

There is, of course, the fanciful part of Diane Krüger on the line. It does add a very warm and affectionate part, so I really am not turned off by it at all. I watch this movie every holiday season in order to remind myself the sacrifices of the men who came before us, the sacrifices people have made over the centuries, how the world has been shaped, and how it continues to be shaped. I cry every time and I'm not ashamed to admit it - it touches on a very deep level for me because of my familial background.

Give it a chance - watch it.

Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) (2005) is an epic war drama film based on the WWI Christmas truce of December 1914, depicted through the eyes of French, Scottish, & German soldiers. It was written & directed by Christian Carion. Here are the pros & cons of this film as I see it, I hope this helps you.
Pros:
1. Overall an important & interesting story
2. Gary Lewis (Gary Stevenson), Alexander Ferns, & Neil McNulty all do a fantastic job with their parts
3. Great message on the futility of war & taking orders
4. Good X-mas story & I don't even like X-mas
Cons:
1. Some of the acting by some is not all that great, especially closer to the end

The assassination of the Heir to the Austro-Hungarian Throne on 28 June 1914 by the murderous hands of a Serbian nationalist, motivated by selfishly inclined Serbian officers, ignited the until then unimaginable brutality of a worldwide war on an industrial basis with machine guns, tanks, air crafts and a variety of poisonous gasses. More then 17 million promising lives were extinguished during World War I, 1 August 1914-11 November 1918. In World War II, basically the continuation of World War I, another 60 million were killed. Still over all the years, from 1914-1945, the flicker of enlightened human decency spontaneously sparked by Christian, humane-thinking, feeling and believing front line soldiers of England, France and Germany would never vanish from the hearts and minds of those who experienced the grand horror of trench warfare as endured in North Eastern France and the mass casualties of fast, unrelenting mechanized warfare suffered later on all over Europe and North Africa. What the three company commanders, all lieutenants, achieved in safeguarding the Christmas Eve truth of 1914 could not be realized in the Treaty of Versailles and the newly formed League of Nations engineered by the involved belligerent nations. Only after World War II, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) emerged, which also took Germany into its fold. The European Union, now incorporating 28 nations, makes commerce and finance their unified concern, while NATO assures the peace among Europeans and nations beyond. In the end, the lieutenants prevailed! Artistically, "Joyeux Noel" deeply touches its viewers' hearts and souls. So does its accompanying music. Needless to say, all actors involved gave a truly magnificent performance, with Diane Krueger on top.

So very often, the most obvious thing about war is death. The exception to that is December 24th, 1914. Some creative license had been taken, but something exceptional happened!
