Aguirre does a great job of referencing scientific information in a palatable way that makes me want to know more. Can’t wait to read the China Study. And though not a cookbook, I found several recipes to try from the book, and look forward to sampling several cookbooks from the resource section.
Most importantly, the book has motivated me to actually prioritize some important steps in taking care of my most important possession—my health. After the challenges of 2020, many of us are reflecting on our own lives and health, and the health of our planet. There are so many reasons to eat more plant based. Even if we don’t become 100% vegan, or even if it takes a while, we can move ahead in a more positive direction.
One of the issues I had with this book is that most of the research and supporting evidence to back the author’s claims are anecdotal, not peer-reviewed, or come from controversial sources. I wish there had been more scientific claims to back up what Aguirre says. There is also a negative feeling toward Western medicine in this book which I understand in some ways but in others it’s a bit off-putting as medication is sometimes the only option people have when diet alone won’t fix things. And though Aguirre advises a mostly raw vegan diet to reverse heart disease symptoms, a good portion of the recipes in this book aren’t raw. Aguirre points out you can look online for recipes in places like Pinterest, which is true, but then why purchase this book? All in all, I found Joyful, Delicious, Vegan to be a good source for tips and tricks, but readers should take the sources provided with a grain of salt.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Sherra seems like one of the most gentle and kind people in the way she writes and how she lives her life.
There is so much information packed into this small book, and it's not only based on Sherra's personal experience, but also backed by science and some pretty heavy hitters in the medical community.
I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be better, regardless of age, health status or dietary preference!
In the end, this book is the authors personal journey to a healthy and sustainable lifestyle and it may not work for everyone. If you’re motivated by individual and unique stories to better health, I’d give this book a read!

Aguirre's book was definitely a catalyst for me to start eating right! With my own family history of heart disease, Aguirre's story touched me on a personal level and inspired me to be more mindful of my eating habits. Even if you're not vegan, you'll definitely enjoy this book!
