"I've never reached out to an author to request their permission to endorse their book...until now. Ingrid Fetell Lee invites us into a dimension of the human experience that was, ironically, hidden to most of us. She shows us how we can mindfully see joy in the simple aesthetics of our surroundings --and it has already changed my everyday life. If I'm feeling blue, I remember to look at the new leaves on the tree outside my window. It is simple but profound. Joyful is irresistibly compelling. The idea of Joyful fills me with joy."―Amy Cuddy, New York Times bestselling author of Presence

"Joyful overturns conventional wisdom about happiness: that it comes from within, and that experiences -- not things -- make us happier. Ingrid Fetell Lee's delightful book evokes the same positive feelings she describes. It is full of whimsy, wonder, energy, and joy. I loved it."
―Sonja Lyubomirsky, Professor of Psychology, University of California, Riverside, and author of The How of Happiness

JOYFUL shows us that our world's natural harmony provides the most renewable and accessible sources of joy. We’ve evolved to gravitate toward certain universal aesthetics – shapes, colors, and other sensory effects. These hardwired characteristics and environmental responses have kept us alive as a species for thousands of years. They also explain why we stop to watch a beautiful sunset, flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and can’t help but smile when new snow blankets the ground. By understanding the components of blissful moments, we can transform joy from an intangible, fleeting feeling, to something that stays with us throughout the day.
Thank you, Ingrid Fetell Lee, for writing a wise and fascinating book that has changed my life!!
From smaller nuggets - that the word "gaudy" has Latin roots from which the word joy was also derived, to broader and more impactful observations - that our physical environment can also deeply effect our physical health and mental well being - Ingrid lays out a perfect blueprint for understanding, appreciating and creating joy.
She even examines the art (and explores the validity of) of Feng Shui, the larger ideas of both harmony and abundance and how even simple things like indoor plants can channel the direction and mood of our daily activities. These points seem obvious once stated, but is not something we often take the time to think about. Her examination of joy is far reaching - from landscape architecture to one of my favorite interior designers Dorthy Draper - to the more obscure and magical Icelandic elves, with each chapter coming at her topic from a new angle. Perhaps a side effect of her book, as I type this I am sitting in between flights in a drab, greyscale, commercial/industrial airport wishing someone would come in with a paintbrush and and splash the walls and floors with some pinks, blues and yellows. It would make waiting for my next flight a lot less tedious, even joyful!

She goes on to describe how we can find joy, practically, in some of our most mundane surroundings. After watching (and rewatching) her TED talk, following her on instagram under @aestheticsofjoy and joining in the #joyspotting revolution, I was hooked. I started sharing my experiences with those close to me, describing how to go about daily life discovering the joy staring us in the face. It was like treasure hunting. Soon everyone from my 71 year old mum to my 6 year old daughter, were joyspotting.
So when I found out Ingrid had a book coming out, I pre-ordered it and purely waiting for it to arrive was a kind of joy. And it has not disappointed. The book is easy to read, thoughtfully set out and categorised according to several clear themes. She navigates you seemlessly through each so that you arrive with a deeper knowledge of each aesthetic and how it has been proved scientifically or experientially, to bring joy.
This is not written in an airy-fairy, metaphorical way as many self-help, mind-broadening books are on transcending the mundane. Instead, it is a book full of practical ways to help bring joy into one's life. From surrounding ourselves with more colour to introducing more fun, greenery and texture into our lives. Her design background brings a wealth of knowledge and it shows in the meticulously researched material and thoughtful interviews she describes.
Most of us want to feel more joyful and connected to our surroundings and others. A revolution in hunting for happiness has brought many books to the market on discovering that utopia.
Most of them tell us that we SHOULD be grateful, happy and content with what we have around us.
Ingrid Fetell Lee's 'Joyful' book gives us the permission we seek to own our Joy, and the PRACTICAL tools to discover it.
Do yourself a favour and read this book. It has opened my eyes and soothed my soul.
Reading this was like wow...yes I need to rediscover that side of me. I need to stop worrying what others think and just do what brings me joy.
This is a book that changed my life within minutes of reading it. I made changes that same day I read it, and though there will be more changes to come I love this book.
The book is not perfect, but its message and the affect it has had on me are invaluable. That is why this book is 5 stars in my eyes.
Joy is all around us if we open our eyes!
