"This book is basedon the true story of a dog called Joyful Trouble. Thereare three maincharacters: five year-old Tommy, his nine-year-old sister Anna, andtheir grandad. When they see a Great Dane in a parade,Grandad tells thekids the story of a dog he loved, called JoyfulTrouble. He remembersbeing in the Navy during WWII and meeting the dogon the way to work oneday.
Joyful Trouble was a mischievous butvery helpful dog. Theseamen got to know and love him and the dog wassoon part of the crew.Joyful Trouble and Grandad were good friends andwere put to worktogether. Along the way, the dog meets new friends, loses old ones andstill is very happy. He causes a lot of trouble(that's how he got hisname) but also stops fights and commotion. Inthis book, Grandad is thestory-teller and Anna and Tommy are the veryeager listeners.
Ilove this book and it made me happy and, atsome parts, sad. It is also a bit funny. The reason I love it so much is because I love dogs and true stories. I hope others will also enjoy it. I would recommend it forages 8+."

From the Author
I've often watched my parents interact with my children and noticed, with amazement, that special bond between them everyone talks about. Itis an invisible string that makes them smile as soon as they lay eyes on each other and it pulls them together in a fun activity filled withlaughter and giggles.
My mother is the one they would want forpretend games, yet it is my father they prefer for story time. Perhapsbecause grandfathers, with their solid appearance, are nothing butgentle giants when it comes to their own grandchildren and, admit it,nothing can compare with a grandfather's ability to mimic someone else's voice!
I still remember my own grandfather telling my cousin and I a story with Prince Charming which used to pick his nose :)
Ana and Tommy's Grandad from "Joyful Trouble" is just like this.
"Joyful Trouble" is a fun, heartfelt book for young and old.
I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I loved to write it. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Nine-year-old Ana & her little brother Tommy are taken on an historical adventure by their grandfather. It is the true story of an exceptional & gentle giant. The Great Dane Canine of the Royal Navy: Joyful Trouble. Experiences that draw the reader in, through touching life lessons about courage, determination, resilience, loyalty, civic duty, empathy, history and a friendship that binds beyond human conception.
Grandpa looking into Ana’s eyes—said, ‘You must remember this. Determination and faith Ana, will always get you through tough times. Always.”
With gratitude to a writer whose compassionate, relatable writing and commitment to creating quality reads for youth- drew us in.
The tale will appeal to the animal loving side of children who are huge fan of dogs. Life lesson are taught through the tale such as to be mindful of others and to always consider the people around you. Joyful Trouble is a refreshing tale for all ages and can be a tale for you.
The special bond between Ana and Tommy and their grandfather is precious. The story is about a Great Dane's adventures during the grandfather's time in the Navy.
A delightful read!
The story begins on April 1 in South Africa. We meet Ana, 9 years old, and big sister to Tommy, who is almost 5. Ana is a loving and dutiful child who admires her parents and enjoys helping her younger brother. The children are with their Grandpa, sharing an exciting day together. They are enjoying the festivities of a parade in honor of Joyful Trouble. Joyful Trouble was a dog, and so much more- a Great Dane and Ordinary Seaman. There is even a brass statue in his honor.
Trouble had been a friend to many. He served in the Royal Navy between 1939- 1944. (His first name, Joyful was added when he was enrolled in the Navy.) As a Navy mascot, Joyful Trouble boosted the morale of many seamen in the South Atlantic during World War II. He was at his happiest when everyone was getting along.
After the parade, over the course of several days, Grandpa tells the story of Joyful Trouble to his grandchildren. The story is a fun one that children will enjoy. And in a positive, easy way, the virtues of love, friendship, and understanding are blended in. Grandpa is a good companion to the children. Grandma’s stew is made with love. Dad works hard and Mom is a good role model.
Young readers will also get to learn about World War II, but in a non-threatening way. As Grandpa says, “Determination and faith, Ana, will always get you through the tough times.”
The story is charming and well-written. I loved the cover, with the Great Dane and his seaman’s cap. The main characters in the book are easy to get to know and love. Highly recommend.
