The art changes a few times for each story (and there are three stories), even though it is one artist. Shows how someone's style changes over the course of a decade.
I was sick of Marvel and only Sandman, Hellblazer, and Batman books were the only thing I read at the time.( Along with the occasional Dark Horse book)
America was quite interesting and it was quite a different take on Mega City One and it's residents under the rule of the facist judges. It has still held up after 30 years and is quite an entertaining read. The rest of the collection not so much except for how the third story ends.( It brought a smile to my face)
2 things before I go, number 1. I hate when they change characters by some virtue signaling writer/editor with an axe to grind. Take a look on how John Waggner didn't like how people were gloryfiing Judge Dredd's fascist viewpoints. He wrote a story that made you have sympathy for the preps.
2. After saying this I do prefer the more action orinated stuff myself.
Great Dredd comic, great comic overall. It is now one of my favorite.
Writing is excellent, art is great. Story is top notch. This is one of the greatest JD books I've ever laid my hands on.
1. Content: a classic story from the judge dredd canon, packaged with its two sequels, forming a good cohesive arc. The main thrust is to make us question what Dredd stands for? Can there be freedom and justice? Interesting and well thought out issues portrayed in comic book form. The sequels help flesh out the issues even more. The art is not completely to my taste, but it serves the story well.
2. Format: still missing a few beats here. I now have three graphic novels in kindle format, and in this one each frame can be magnified to a fixed larger size, but a page cannot be zoomed, and as I get older, the fonts get smaller, and cannot be adjusted for my failing vision. I was squinting on more than one page to read the speech bubbles. The comixology guided viewing format is still better, which is a shame as there are books only available in this format.
So content is four stars and format is two, giving a three star review overall.

For me one of the interesting aspects of Dredd is the seeming conflict between his own views on justice and fairness when compared to that of the overall Justice Department. This story seems to blur that line and challenges whether Dredd is actually a 'hero'. I would agree with other reviews that the second and third stories do not live up to the first, but they do form an interesting on-going thread, how ever Joe Dredd does redeem himself to a certain degree as a 'good' character. As it would seem that America is not included in the Complete Case Files it would seem that this is your best opportuity to read this classic story so I'd highly recommend it. In my opinion this story is as good as Watchmen.
The art work is first class and the cript work is brilliant; overall a thoroughly enjoyable read. Buy with confidence!
