i should probably give it a 5 (speaking about the series rather than this particular title)...every young girl of a certain age (7-9ish) went through a phase with this series of books and gobbled them up as fast as McDonald could put them out...as a reader tho, i have a bias against anything that is too 'pop'...that said, i personally have not read them so they could be great literary art that i am just clueless about...

what i will say is that the girls love them...my granddaughter has all the titles, we have bought them for her friends and other young family members for gifts, always been a hit..so if you have a girl in this age group you are looking to turn onto contemporary reading material that is age appropriate and fun, this is a good bet

Judy Moody is back, and she is the luckiest girl around! But will her good luck be enough to get her a spot at the spelling bee in Washington, D.C.? Find out in Megan McDonald's latest super fun chapter book, JUDY MOODY AND THE BAD LUCK CHARM.

It all starts when Grandma Lou buys Judy a smooshed good luck penny (it only cost 51¢!) at Mt. Trashmore. With her lucky penny in her pocket, Judy manages to grab not one, not two, but three stuffed animals in the Claw machine at Two Chicks on a Raft Diner. Her good luck continues the next day with lucky breakfast cereal, a hidden cache of 10 whole dollars, and three strikes in a row bowled at Jessica Finch's birthday party.

When Mr. Todd, Judy's third-grade teacher, announces that the day's spelling test is cancelled, Judy is sure it is the result of her lucky penny's magic. But Mr. Todd has another spelling challenge in mind: a class spelling bee. Everyone knows that Jessica is the WBS (World's Best Speller), but Judy is hopeful that her lucky penny will help her win the class spelling bee and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the Great Third Great Spelling Bee to be held there. Unfortunately, dropping the lucky penny in the toilet at school seems to have robbed Judy of her excellent luck. Before she knows it, she is knocked out of the bee with Chihuahua. "Holy burrito!"

So Jessica heads to D.C., but Judy gets to go too as pig sitter for Jessica's new potbellied pet. As readers familiar with Judy's spunky personality and knack for innocent mischief can guess, the trip to D.C. is a full-on adventure --- from amazing history to pig chases, from a narrowly averted spelling disaster to a presidential motorcade.

JUDY MOODY AND THE BAD LUCK CHARM is the 11th book in the Judy Moody series and is a welcome addition.

Judy Moody is up to her old tricks, this time with the help of a very lucky penny. She's winning at everything she tries - bowling, spelling, and even the never-to-beat claw machine, until she drops the penny in an unfortunate spot and it becomes the unlucky penny. When Judy discovers that she gave up on luck too soon, she recovers the penny to ride her luck all the way to Washington D.C. Oh lucky day! This is book eleven in the series, with a reading level of grade 3.

Just when you think Judy Moody cannot get any better, it does. Including this book, there are 11 Judy Moody story books, 3 Judy Moody Activity books, 2 Judy Moody and Stink cross-over books and 9 Stink Moody books. For a series about one family to have 25 books and the authors to come up with more great ideas is amazing and wonderful all rolled up together. My children are just discovering these books and they love them. They love Judy and Stink, they love the illustrations and they find the stories hilarious. Even though they are nowhere near being able to read these books yet, they love having them read to them. In fact they are the only chapter books we read. And after we read them they love going back through the illustrations and telling the stories to each other.

The chapters in this brilliant story are:
The Luck Penny
Good Luck x3
Planet Lucky
The Bad-Luck Charm
Uck Bluck Charm
The District of Cool
Finch-Face Freakout
Judy Moody, Pig Sitter
Pig in the City
E-M-A-N-C-I-P-A-T-E

Judy gets a lucky penny and it seems to be working. Things just keep going her way. Then when her luck seems to turn she gets rid of the penny. But once Stink has it, he seems to have good luck, so Judy wants it back. In a story with wishing, a possible trip to Washington D.C., spelling bees and pig sitting there, it is bound to be fun for the whole family. Another great story in an amazing series!
