Those who buy books on juicing tend to do so mostly for the exotic combinations listed. In JUICE ALIVE, Steven Bailey and Larry Trivieri provide that and far more. Their text is a primer on the art of juicing, one that is written for the layman. For those who wish to first read about juicing recipes, they can turn to the second half of the book for the many recipes indicated. What is on interest is that Bailey and Trivieri examine juicing as if it were a mixture of art and science. They begin with an erudite chapter on the basic need for juicing, and how juicing fits in with the larger scope of a healthy diet and lifstyle. They follow with a history of juicing beginning with the ancient Greeks and continuing up to the present day. This historical overview was a little detail heavy yet it serves to remind the reader that juicing is not simply a modern health fad reserved for the Hollywood elite. Their chapter on the nutritional benefits of juicing is of concern to readers who wish to know how enzymes and amino acids interact with digested food to produce energy, which is an area not generally well understood by the layman. I found the digression on the acid-alkaline balance to be of particular use since the choice of fruits and vegetables juiced will dictate whether the juice absorbed will be acidic (unhealthy) or alkaline (healthy). The authors follow with a lengthy list of juicing machines and price ranges, and for those who watch infomercials, the LaLane Power Juicer heads the list.

Since juicing is more than just inserting fruits and vegetables down a chute, it is incumbent that any juicing author explain what to juice and how to juice. This is the authors' strong point.

Juice Alive is a easily accessible introduction to the late 20th century phenomena of American(US) vegetable and fruit juicing and fasting. The first part of the book seems to be written more by Steven Bailey ND. In it he constructs a history of juicing and to some degree modern naturapathic medicine. He starts with the Greeks and works up to the present with such 20th century proponents as Dr. Norman Walker and Jack Lalanne. Both of whom where long living examples of the benefits of juicing not to mention exercise and living with a positive attitude. This part of the book would be stronger if it was annotated clearly. The second and middle part seem to be written more by Larry and reads more like a how to guide to juicing. Buying a juicer is handled based on cost and type of juicer rather than brand which is good since there are many review sites available on line. The authors then go into good detail about how to juice different fruits and vegetables. they stress the importance of seasonal and variety of vegetables, although they fall back on a fairly simple basic base recipe with some repetitive modification when it comes to treating alphabetically categorized disease states in the second half of the book. There is also a sections on juice fasting that is heavily influenced by Dr. Gabriel Cousins and Dr. Bailey's experiences. The end of the book has several recommendations for books on vegetarian and raw food although this may be a function of the publisher rather than the authors since they talk more about a organic ethically/sustainably produced diet rather than a strictly vegetarian one. Overall a good introduction to the subject but by no means exhaustive.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a book that gave me specific recipes that I could use and in addition to that provide me with basic information that someone who is just beginning to juice could easily understand. I was very happy with this book it provided me with the information I needed as a novice juicer and it was easy to read.

This book pretty much delivers what its subtitle says: the ultimate guide to juicing remedies. Beginning with a comprehensive overview of juicing history and benefits it also offers practical advice for a juicing lifestyle, which is followed with an alphabetically arranged list of physical ailments and the juice combinations and recipes best suited to address them. Finally, the authors offer a juice cleansing regime and beauty program to jumpstart your health improvement. I did notice that many of the suggested juice recipes were identical or similar for many of the ailments; I attribute this to the wide scope of healing benefits that the specific vegetables or fruits offer.

There are many good books on juicing available, but if you have Juice Alive you certainly have all the information you need to heal, nourish, and invigorate your health and well-being.
