From the Author
JBB is part of my effort to teach kids to stand up and speak up for themselves and others, build healthy classroom and school cultures, and make the world a better place! Only by building safe and connected cultures will we get rid of the bullying behaviors that harm children. Punishing bullies is not enough. We must teach our children a better way.

For over thirty years he worked as a teacher and as an administrator in Michigan public schools, and developed an acclaimed model early learning success initiative, .
A prolific author, Bob has written best-selling books for educators, parents and children, along with many journal publications. Bob Sornson is dedicated to giving far more students a real chance for success. Schools that cover, test, and sort don’t effectively serve the needs of kids, families, or society. Nor do schools that allow students to fall into patterns of struggle and failure in the early years of learning. Nor do parents that do not know how to build positive family routines, set limits without anger, and help build the solid base of connection and love that allow children to thrive and build purposeful lives. In his work, Bob challenges us to use the wealth of knowledge and information available to us to build systems and societies in which kids thrive, care for each other, demonstrate personal character, love to learn, and work collaboratively.

Spoiler Alert
A new kid, Pete, moves in and does not go along with the class and school rules. The other kids invite him to play in the soccer games or eat with them at lunch, but he would rather be a bully. He squishes the purple juice in his juice box on Ruby’s shirt. Ruby gets mad, but Ralph reminds her about the promise they made in class. Pete wants to know why Ralph stood up for him and Ralph says because I am not a bystander. Pete then explains at his old school he was bullied so he wanted to be mean before everyone was mean to him. And they all enjoyed school after that.
My problems with the book; While it is written in language easily read by advanced second to lower fourth, it is never explicit about what the kids should say and how they need to handle the bully. It refers to the promise, listed for adults in the back of the book. The bully, Pete, has a reason for being a bully and can articulate it. In my classes I found that bullies often do not know why they are bullies. Pete just stops when Ralph says to stop. There are some bullies who just like to exercise their power and agency over other kids and any emotional problem will take years of therapy to unravel. Bullies often add the child who speaks out to his list to bully, and they do not just stop because someone tells them to do so. Most teachers will tell you that bullies get better at hiding their attacks when they are noticed by an adult. Bullies know to watch for adult interference with their plans.
If all you want to do is open communication about bullies this book would be a good place to start, but it is not a book with explicit solutions that kids will pick up as you read.
In The Juice Box Bully, the children of Mr. Peltzers class meet Pete, the new kid in school. Pete quickly acts the part of the bully. The class does not stand by and just let Pete bully. Instead the class has made a pact to stand together and stop bullying. Their willingness and courage to stand up for not only the kids being bullied but for the bully himself, makes their school what it should be, a safe place for all to learn and grow.
Teachers, check out "The Promise" at the end of the book. 8 Powerful statement you will want to share with your classroom. "The Promise" helps children be empowered to take a pledge to stand up to bad behavior. What a wonderful tool for your classroom. Read the book and discuss "The Promise" on the last page. Post "The Promise" in your classroom. Work together as a class the first week to write a "Promise" for your classroom as well. Become a classroom community that CARES!
