Works reasonably well on a Surface 3 (vs Surface *Pro* 3), but only when running on batteries.

Though it is designed for use with the Surface *Pro* line, I bought the Juiced System adapter use with my Surface 3. Because it is not designed for the Surface 3, the adapter obscures the micro-USB charging port. That's not a big deal for my use, so I moved on to benchmarks.

An external SSD (Samsung T1) connected directly to the Surface 3 USB 3.0 port without the Juiced Systems adapter yielded 138 MBPS when copying from the SSD back to the same to the SSD (bidirectional test). That's roughly equivalent to about 300 MBPS unidirectional (which I can't test directly because of the Surface 3 eMMC speed... see below). I then performed the same test, this time through the Juiced Systems adapter and observed 124 MBPS, equivalent to roughly 270 MBPS unidirectional. Thus, the adapter's hub is degrading performance about 10% relative to the Surface 3's built in USB 3.0 port. Not too bad in my opinion.

I then copied an SD card (rated for 85 MBPS under ideal conditions) from the Juiced Systems adapter to the Samsung SSD which was also connected to the Juiced Systems adapter and observed transfer speeds of 59 MBPS. I performed the same test again using a good SD card reader plugged into the Juiced Systems adapter along with the Samsung SSD and observed 70 MBPS. Thus, the Juiced Systems SD card slot is performing about 16% slower than a high performance SD card adapter plugged into one of the Juiced Systems USB 3.0 ports.The 16% degradation is a bit high for my taste, but 59 MBPS throughput is still pretty usable in my application.

Just for completeness sake I tested the write speed to the Surface 3's internal eMMC "SSD" from the external SSD, the Juiced Systems SD card slot, and the alternate SD reader plugged into a Juiced Systems USB 3.0 port, and observed 33 MBPS transfers in all cases. Thus, the Surface 3's internal eMMC "SSD" is the limiting factor when transferring from the Juiced Systems adaptor *or* the Surface 3 USB 3.0 port. Note Surface *Pro* 3 computers use real SSDs instead of eMMC memory, and they will show a higher internal transfer speeds than the Surface 3.

All told, I think the transfer speeds I see on my Surface 3 equipped with this Juiced Systems adapter are pretty respectable. Potential purchasers should, however, note the adapter will *only* work when the Surface 3 is operating on battery because the adapter covers the Surface 3's micro-USB charging port. I'm happy with the Juiced Systems adapter on my Surface 3 because I plan to use it only occasionally to transfer SD cards from my camera to my external SSD, and I can do that while operating on battery.

Biggest mistake Microsoft made with the surface was only a single USB port, should always be two so that you don't have to unplug a mouse to insert another USB device. The Juiced Adapter fills that void. We used these for the Surface Pro 2, worked great, and so does this one designed for the Surface Pro 3. Fits snug with just 1mm between power plug and it. Considered taking off one star because the plastic is low grade, could be thicker and sturdier, just treat it gently and you shouldn't have any challenges. We have noticed very little degradation in USB 3.0 speeds through this device. Be careful when inserting your Surface into a bag or carry case, probably best to remove the adapter so it doesn't snap or twist and crack. The fact that the device wiggles a bit is not a defect, just a side effect of its length and the fact that it only has a single USB port on the surface to hold itself into.

Not quite what I had hoped

It does not seem to like / handle USB connections and SD card at the same time. And it seems to get "overloaded" and stop functioning if both USB ports and an SD card are plugged in. I have not yet tried to distinguish between a computer problem vs. a problem with the Juiced, but there is an issue with compatibility or functionality either way resulting in it not doing what I thought it would be able to do (namely, transfer pictures from SD cards directly through one of the Juiced USB connections to a backup drive without having to transfer the pics to the Surface first, and then to the backup drive). Perhaps there is a buried functional fix in the drivers somewhere, but that is likely beyond my geekness to handle. In the meantime, I will try a different USB hub and see if I get any different result... if no different, then my disappointment will be with the USB handling by Microsoft and the Surface Pro itself. I'll change my rating if I ever find a fix.

EDIT: Hah... since buying this I hadn't looked at other reviews and others seem to indicate similar issues with the device not being able to handle multiple connections, intermittent function, and doing even worse things. Soooo... I am thinking mine is in the same realm of disappointment and I revised my review down a star. I would say DO NOT BOTHER. It may or may not do what you hope it will.

Note that there is a new version with an external power port which may be better, but I will not chance Juiced again.

3mm to long but still works after you choose power or dock? Concept great but flawed.

OK first of all, I have a Surface Pro 4, now this device does work. But it is to long for the power cord and the dock to be on at the same time. Now if you here different there lying. Now that said if you just want to use the dock with power then it work fine. But what if your low on power and you want up a 35000mah batter to with it? Your still screwed, I know I done it. You have to make your choice when using it. The problem on the Surface Pro 4 is the dock is just a little too long. You would think for 30 bucks, they would have thought of this, but they didn't. Now it is a great product, hum now what am I going to do to make it work right? Well I am going to modify it, how you might ask? I don't know yet? Now I don't have a Surface Pro 3, now on that it might work great, like in the pictures, But on the Surface Pro 4 it too long with the power cord. To me it looks like it 3mm to long hits the top of the power cord. I give it 5 stars if it work the way I thought it would. But overall I still like it. Note to the designer, check the Surface Pros series and make sure it work right, before you put it on the market idiots. I would had a pic, but you get the idea. It will still help me even with the flaw. Hope this review helps someone.
