“Julian and Lia” casts a spell that is difficult to resist. And really, you shouldn’t. You just buy it and read it. This is New Adult done right. It kept me up into the night and if I hadn’t forced myself to put it down, I would have read until morning. It’s just that good.
It tells the story of two college students who share a film studies class. Lia is inexperienced, but curious. She’s never thought much of her looks, but once she does put in an effort, she’s a knockout. A freshman in college in Maine, she’s smart and gets good grades. But there’s more to her than these standard tropes. She owns her sexuality, even if she doesn’t realize it. She is smart about it and ends up as a very original character.
Julian is 21 years old. He is surly and withdrawn, a bit of a wiseass, but quite intelligent. He is dark haired, green-eyed, muscled, and hot. Something is going on under that hoodie and you want to find out what it is. And you want to find it out NOW.
Lia feels an overwhelming attraction to Julian, which is returned, but he holds himself in check, since she let it spill that she’s a virgin. But little by little, they can’t resist each other. And THAT story is one you want to read.
You would think that this good girl-bad boy dynamic would feel familiar, but here, it doesn’t. It feels fresh and new.
Oh, and HOT. Very hot. Wow.
Maria Monroe has a gift for highlighting the little things that make your blood warm up. The glance, the movement, the touch, are all described in glorious sexy detail and the care and attention to these things are what makes this book. She builds and builds the sexual tension until, well, you’ll just have to find out.
The dialogue is well-done. The things that come out of Julian’s mouth … oh my. In real life, I would probably have my heart stop. So great. Lia picks up on her roommate’s quirks of always putting a question on the end of statements, which feels true to life and is very funny.
Tight writing, seductive word choice, and compelling characters—who find themselves in increasingly sexier and sexier situations—make this a must-read. I can't wait for the next one (gnashes teeth while waiting).
5 plus stars.
I did enjoy the fact that neither had this great "secret". I'm really tired of these dumb secrets. This was just plain falling in love without realizing what was happening. Yes it is a cliff hanger of sorts but this one is worth it and it doesn't cost an arm when your budget won't allow it.
It is well written and funny in places especially when they were caught unexpectedly. It truly is a love story.
