Watching it takes me through a range of emotions from laughter to tears to great introspection into the meaninig of life. I couldn't ask for more in a movie. And I thought Christian Slater played the part perfectly.
A great, off-beat movie that's a real hidden gem. Not as depressing as it might sound.
Spoiler!!!!! The movie follows Julian Po who ends up in a town and its discovered that he's there to commit suicide. The majority of the movie follows the different people in town and their reactions to this knowledge. The town folks in courage him and are kind to him in anticipation of his death. Julian Po falls in love and starts to change his mind deciding he wants to live. However, the girl he loves commits suicide first, and though he try's to leave town the towns folk won't let him. In the end you find the townsfolk leading Julian Po out the door and towards his death.
The company, however, who sold thus movie is excellent! The DVD arrived very fast and in great condition!
Julian Po is played by Christian Slater, who is so good he doesn't appear to be acting at all. The supporting cast is excellent, too. Even the music score is enchanting and very European. It is designed to fit the action perfectly. For example, when Po is followed down the street of a small town by five or six children, the music seems to be played by five or six wind instruments. But as more and more people begin to follow Po, more and more instruments are added to the orchestration until you have a crowd following him to the same theme played with a lush orchestral sound. This is just one of many details that makes this film work so well.
On the downside there are one or two mistakes of continuity (Po leaves a letter on the bed in his hotel room but in the next scene he has it with him on a bridge where he tears it up; Po has to pay in advance for the first night at the hotel, but not when he returns to extend his stay). And the ending is less than satisfying to those who want a clearer resolution. Nevertheless, I wish more Americans made movies like this one. Hollywood it isn't, and that's perhaps the biggest compliment I can give to "Julian Po."

As a standalone film, Julian Po is perhaps 3 stars. I rate it down because I was in the mood for one thing (a quirky romance / comedy) and got something which ended up dark and... Read morePublished 9 months ago by rbrogan3
I'm a fan of weird independent films, and this is one of those dark, dark comedies you just can't pass up .... you'll dig it if you give it a chance.Published 12 months ago by sliphopper
This quirky movie is going to be a Broadway musical. The movie is charming, but it is deeply disturbing at the same time. It is a fable about how our dreams pollute our future.Published on September 3, 2013 by Thomas Myers
Such a powerful movie, very sentimental and I even believe would be a great adaptation to turn into a play. Bitter sweet and touching till the end. Read morePublished on August 21, 2013 by Tommy Nester
I LOVED my personal copy of Julian Po. I had rented it when I found out that the cast included Cherry Jones. Read morePublished on July 11, 2013 by Jerry Joyner
The only reason I bought this dvd is because it was filmed in the catskills where my family own a house. The area it was filmed is beautiful but the movie is not that great. Read morePublished on February 7, 2013 by Tonton1
