Like other apocalyptic stories, the worst has already happened when we meet Julie. Now survivors--both military and civilian--are out there, struggling to defeat the enemy. And though still a teenager, Julie herself is one tough customer. She's smart and good with a gun.
I enjoyed this story, especially as seen through Julie's eyes. There's a long way to go before all is okay again in the world, and by the end of the book I came away with the sense that she is definitely up for the challenge.
I didn't feel the love connections. The relationships seemed rushed and not built on much. The main female character says that she loves her friends like family. I didn't feel that deep friendship either. Through must of the book she was at odds with them. Then the ending was rushed. The way the book ended made the main characters seem weak and fickle.
I agree with the other reviewer that this is on par with Amanda Hocking's " Hollowland " series. I have devoured (ha ha) the second in the series as well and cannot wait to see the third.
After her father's death, Julie and Jill survived in the wild, even among the scabs for a long time until they came to an army outpost in Tulsa, where they made their new home. It is a fight for survival with many wars occurring under the surface.
The zombies and leaders are organizing, working with scabs are getting smarter. What is their plan and can a small ragtag group bond and learn work together to turn the tide? You will have to read this great first story in the series to find out. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.
So why only 4 stars you might ask? Well, I had several issues with the story. I had a problem with the lack of descriptions of the main characters in the story. It really made it hard for me to imagine the characters in my head, which also made it harder to connect to them and care about them. The redeeming quality being that the story itself was so good that I emanated to care anyway. The Scabs were not explained well and I had a hard time figuring out exactly what they were and why they were on their own and so hated. Still not really sure. Lastly, the author I plagued by the inability to make us feel the love or romance. Could be a man thing, but he could really stand to have a female author put the romance and vivid descriptions to connect with us readers in this and future stories. So after all of this, why did I not take off more than one star? Despite the problems, this was a really great story. Very imaginative and unique. If the author could be in touch with his feminine side, there would be no stopping him!
This book took me by surprise! I usually only enjoy my zombies slow with only one purpose...eating people. I don't want to give anything away, but this put a cool twist on the zombie horde! One of the few times I wanted the survivors to stop shooting..that should tell you something.
I really enjoyed the characters and found them not only believable, but flawed in all the right ways. I would look forward to a prequel to fully experience their entire journey. Flashbacks left me wanting more and I feel would have enhanced the story overall.
Overall...good read and will watch and hope for more!
The zombies in this book are not your average brain dead zombies, they are smart and growing smarter and stronger every day. There are so many twists and turns in this book and the pace is quick and keeps you turning the pages. At first I couldn't picture the characters very well but then as I got further into the story I found it to be smooth flowing and I liked it very much.
I think there is a love/hate with some of the characters and I have to say this makes it a very creative story. Well done for creating these characters.
This was a fun and exciting book. I look forward to the next book in the series.
