Speaking no Italian, he sets out on his journey to the town of Verona to become a Secretary of Juliet, as the letter writers are called. The office where the letters are compiled and sorted, in various languages, and then answered, are organized by one woman, whose father created the Club di Giulietta. She is not warm or welcoming at first, but some of the others make the author feel at home and are appreciative of another letter answerer.
Soon, he takes to his job and learns what he needs to do. It is not simply to answer the letters with advice. The book will reveal it all.
After he goes back to his teaching job at the high school, another year of Romeo and Juliet, the year also brings closure with this ill-fated relationship and to his teaching career. Is it fate? Is he following his heart. His students have taught him so much. This is a book for anyone who is a romantic at heart and has an open mind. Perhaps it doesn’t hurt that Verona is one of the most charming cities in the world, that there is so much to learn from the original star-crossed lovers, and so many ways to interpret how their love plays out.
After reading Juliet’s Answer, I have added Verona to my list of places to visit. Dixon describes the town beautifully, and I cannot wait to see it someday for myself including Juliet’s house and statue. I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it. Thanks to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to reach this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
William Shakespeare told the tragic love story of two young people destined to have an unhappy ending. In fact, the play begins with the ending.
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
-Prologue, Romeo and Juliet
Verona has become a symbol for many. While Romeo and Juliet are fictional characters, the impact of their story - the beginning, middle and end - lives on in this Italian city. More than 6,000 letters arrive every year to be answered by the team at Club di Giulietta.
Soul searching, searching for answers or just to get a response from “Juliet,” thousands of letters are sent to Juliet every year and answered by a team of people - volunteers - who try to craft a heart felt and appropriate response to each lovelorn writer.
In Juliet’s Answer, Dixon takes you on a journey where I learned a lot about Juliet…but also a lot about life. This memoir takes you down a road many of us have traveled. The road of unrequited love and learning to live and let go. If anything, Romeo and Juliet teaches us that life is not about happy endings. Like most high school students, I too had to read this play that didn’t seem to make a lot of sense at the time. I wish I had have had a teacher like Dixon who seems to have made learning fun and inclusive. I have always felt like these two characters were so irresponsible and naive, but we can all be that way sometimes. I now have a new appreciation for these two.
“Don't waste your love on somebody, who doesn't value it.”
