Editorial Reviews

"Exceptional... Offers no easy solutions to the various security threats America faces today... As Hellman's convincing, conflicted characters face impossible choices, the tension is real and memorable." Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW
"Hellmann's writing sparkles...plenty of suspense in this richly detailed thriller, but Hellmann's characteristic wit and warmth are evident, too." Booklist
From spies to drones and hackers, Jump Cut  is a heart-stopping tale of corporate espionage that will have you snapping on your seatbelt.  The tangled web of international intrigue is riveting. Hellman is a renowned master of suspense, and her great talent shows in the story's many rich characters, the beautifully honed paragraphs, and the sweep of her provocative story. A keeper!" -- Gayle Lynds, New York Times best-selling author of The Assassins

"With spooks, spies, sudden death and double-crosses, JUMP CUT hits all the right notes for a top-notch action thriller. Once again Ellie Foreman is a thoroughly likeable real-world heroine, fiercely protective of those she loves, thrown in at the deep end and swimming for her life. Don't miss it!" --Zoë Sharp, author of the Charlie Fox series and THE BLOOD WHISPERER

"Welcome back Ellie Foreman! JUMP CUT rockets to a stunning but thrilling climax...  Another winner from the standout Chicago novelist Libby Hellmann." Paul Levine, author of BUM RAP
"A chilling tale that may be all too close to the truth." Kirkus Reviews

Ellie Forman returns after ten years. Her daughter Rachel is grown, and she's been building her career making documentaries and videos--the latest client is major defense contractor Delcroft. She;s produced a great set of promotional videos, to be rolled out over a period of several weeks on their website and social media. Some of the footage was shot at a trade show, where a man named Gregory Parks introduces himself as consultant for Delcroft. Parks turned up in an improbably high number of shots, and Ellie and her production staff cut him out as much as possible.

But not completely.

Delcroft VP Charlotte Hollander seems pleased with the videos--until she notices Gregory Parks. Then she becomes angry, calls Ellie's work unprofessional, and cancels the project. Ellie arranges to meet with Parks, trying to find out why, but he falls--or is pushed--onto the railroad tracks in front of s subway train, and is killed.

It's not long before Ellie realizes she's stepped into something much bigger and more dangerous than she could have imagined. Armed only with a thumb drive Parks dropped, she starts asking questions and attracting dangerous attention.

This is an enjoyable book with a nicely intricate mystery. Sometimes, though I got frustrated with Ellie, sometimes rushing in with apparent naivete about how dangerous what she's doing is; sometimes seeming to think that if she can only hand over the thumb drive to the right person, she'll be out of it and safe. This was a definite weakness in the story.

Despite that, I like Ellie, Luke, and their friends, and I'll be interested to read more of Ellie's adventures.

Recommended as light entertainment.

Jump Cut by Libby Fischer Hellman

This new Ellie Forman book took me to a place of excitement, creativity and secrets; the creation of a video to be played in sections, 'chapters' as Ellie puts it, for a huge aeronautic corporation is very well written, as Libby Fischer Hellman turns out another fascinating storyline of probable murder and plenty of mayhem thrown in the works. Libby has a definite feel for her characters, they always come alive (or dead as the case may be.) I always like to learn something new from a book, and learn I did. I thought the work on the video editing, how and what was done was very interesting, and certainly looked forward to seeing what 'Waldo', Gregory Sparks, was up to. Why did he show up in so many places on this coporate video? He said he was a consultant, but who does he really work for? Why is he asking so many questions if he is indeed a consultant? Why is his visibility in the video a cause for Ellie's work to be shut down immediately?

Now, fired and miserable, Ellie will begin to pick up the pieces and try to learn what happened. Taking action as she always does, she sets up a meeting with Gregory, meeting where their various El trains intersect. But, why is he so late? Screams and panic sound the alarm as she approaches the point where his train should be coming in. She's not going to get any answers here. As she accidentally discovers a flash drive she knows could only have come from him, she pockets it. Now she hopes to learn the truth about why she was fired.

Here the pace picks up substantially and the reader is thrust into a roller coaster of terror. A thriller that will keep you enthralled with espionage, spies and kidnapping.
