Jump Ship: Career Change: 10 Steps To Starting A New Career Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 17

If you’ve ever wanted to change your career but didn’t know if it was feasible—or where to start—this book provides a 10-step process to get you moving.

Executive coach Caroline Ceniza-Levine has changed careers multiple times herself, having worked in financial services, management consulting, media and acting, among others. The book details stories from real-life career changers and includes useful tips on how to identify your new career interests, network, interview with confidence and more.

Whether you’re looking to switch industries or make another change—going back to school or starting your own business, for example—this book will give you the steps you need to succeed. It isn’t your standard careers guide on how to land just any job, because changing careers is a different beast: You’ll need to work extra hard to prove you’re a better fit for the role than traditional candidates. From start to finish, this book will give you the tools you need to “jump ship” and secure your new dream job.

Most career books are filled with dreamy promises of what's possible - with little practical guidance about where to start and how to keep at it strategically and realistically while keeping hope alive. In "Jump Ship," the author connects the dots between where you are and where you want to be and breaks the recommended trajectory into manageable and realistic action steps, including links to her other materials containing scripts, tips, and templates.
Caroline Ceniza-Levine is a smart and experienced pragmatist whose true stories about her clients give readers as much hope as do-able tips. What I appreciate most about the book is that she doesn't shy away from the difficulty of career change (I especially like her suggestions for alternatives to career change - or "career change light" that can be equally as satisfying and preserve energy and financial health.) If you're thinking about a career change, I highly recommend this book to inspire you and guide you step-by-step through the process.

I like the author's straight forward approach and it's clear she is qualified to advise on this from both a professional and personal perspective. It's helpful that she uses actual information from real clients (names not revealed). The book is geared toward those currently working who wish to make a change and while this is valuable, I was hoping to get advice on how to make a career change after being out of the workforce for a number of years to raise my family. Nonetheless, this book was helpful to me. I especially like the Conclusion, with the author answering the 10 most commonly asked questions.

Anyone thinking about making a career change should read this book! Not only does Ms. Ceniza-Levine address all aspects of making a career change — emotional, financial, mental, and physical — she does so with the right combination of advice backed up with both research and real-life examples. For those looking for additional detail for points she makes, they have the option to link to a variety of articles she has written through the years.

Ms. Ceniza-Levine does not sugarcoat what making a career change entails: it is hard work. However, based on the road map she provides, potential “ship jumpers” can make good decisions about how and when (and if!) to proceed because they will have an in depth understanding of the introspection, research, and marketing required for success.

As a former career counselor myself, I can appreciate how valuable this book will be for career counselors and career changers alike. I highly recommend it!

Jump Ship shows immediately, clearly, and specifically how different a career change is from a job search, both in gearing up for it, as well as it seeing it all the way through. I think it’s really hard to find books and people out there that give you concrete, tactical, advice and instruction, while also taking a human and humane approach to a complicated transition.

It’s the single best, most useful book I’ve read on career change - if I’d found it earlier, I’d’ve saved a ton of time, money, and heartache. Do yourself a favor, and start your career shift – even if you’re just thinking about it at this stage – with Jump Ship.

This book is a useful step by step guide to changing careers. Caroline uses examples from coaching clients who have successfully changed careers and provides great example dialogues to guide the readers through possible networking narratives. I also loved her point about changing careers before actually doing it - meaning when the time comes for you to start the job search in your chosen new field, you should present yourself as already in the career (with volunteer work, extensive research, classes), as an established insider, not an outsider looking to enter the field. Thanks Caroline for writing this helpful guide!
