The reason I bought it is that I just can't grow anything outside and would very much like to grow my own lettuces and houseplants indoors hydroponically. Eventually I'd like to grow tomatoes and peppers, too, but I think you have to buy a super-expensive light for those. I'm just looking to start this operation now, so I thought I'd try one of the cheaper lights first. I'll update this review in a couple months to let you know if it worked with this light fixture, and add pics if it did.
FIRST UPDATE (Oct 25 2013): I planted lots of lettuces and a few other things hydroponically in 3 5-gallon $4 storage bins from Wallymart, into which I drilled holes in the tops, put in net pots of various sizes, and rockwool cubes. I added a bit of fertilizer to the water - don't know if I was supposed to do that. The lettuces came up in less than 48 hours. They looked a little puny for 2-3 weeks, then took off. I was able to pluck leaves for sandwiches by 4 weeks, and have had decent salads since then, although not every day - maybe every 3-4 days. I also have a pretty energetic-looking cherry tomato plant (Sweet 100 seed). I'm hoping it will produce but we'll see. It's about 6 inches tall. Raising the light is so simple, and you can put one side higher than the other.
Cucumber seed and mint and parsley plants growing very, very slowly, and cilantro hasn't done well at all. Green onions are kind of just sitting there, thinking about growing, but maybe not... It will be a learning process, no doubt.
I might buy another one, but I'm going to just use this one for awhile to make sure it lasts. I have it running about 16 hours per day. I think the next time, I'll buy one of the 4 light bulb fixtures as this one only has one bulb. But that one bulb is supporting 11 plants growing in water!
SECOND UPDATE (Nov. 5 2013) I'm posting pics today. My pics show the side with the tomato under it much higher than the lettuce/parsley/onion side. The tomato fell over today but is otherwise healthy-looking (no tomatoes yet) so I have to figure out some way to prop it up. I think maybe just one of those metal cages with foil on it might work. I'll try it and post further pics. I am enjoying this grow light (and my fresh salads) so much!! I'm ready to move on to bigger and better lights, but wow are they expensive. With this affordable one, you can grow lettuces and herbs with no effort whatsoever, and hopefully more - we'll see! I'll post further pics when the tomato and cucumber do whatever they're going to do.
THIRD UPDATE (Dec. 24 2013) So, Amazon has removed all my pics! Too bad as this fabulous light fixture is now producing lovely little tomatoes from an enormous plant! I'm definitely buying more! BUT, I also note the product pic has changed so I don't know if I can still make one side higher than the other - that was a nice feature. The only thing I tried that didn't grow was cukes.

Frame assembly is quick and straightforward. It goes together in about 4 minutes flat, no screw drivers or rubber mallets required. The latter is recommended by the manufacturer but unnecessary. In spite of complaints from some, I was impressed by how sturdy the frame appears. All in all, a neat solution for those not adept at rigging up lighting for early spring indoor growing season or simply do not have the space for rigged solutions. My seedlings, for instance, are growing on the bar in our finished basement.
With 16 hours of light, the jump start system helped (together with heat mats) my seedlings (various squashes) grow 1/4 inch overnight. An added bonus is that about a third of the finished part (abt. 18' x 25') of the basement and the entire stairway up to the main floor glow with a soft white light from 6 A.M., suddenly adding light to the dreariest part of the day!!
I am elated with this product, which also won high marks (as the most economic and efficient solution) in a review of growth lights in a recent issue of Fine Gardening magazine.
However, four reasons prevented a five-star rating. First, the frame's pieces fit together so tightly together, I doubt I will be able to disassemble the product for storage and then reassemble it again in late winter next year.
Second, the directions for the light and housing could have been clearer. For example, It helps to have a dime on hand in order to turn the slots on the housing in a vertical position for bulb insertion. It also was difficult to twist the inserted bulb back into the vertical position. (There is almost no headroom between bulb and housing. After spending a good 20 minutes cleaning up glass shards from the first broken bulb, I also understandably was hesitant to twist too forcefully.)
Third, I have not used it for more than 48 hours, and therefore cannot make a longer-term judgement about growth outcomes.
Fourth, my system is running on a lot of extras (timer and heating mats), not included in a product billed as a larger growth system. To guarantee 16 hours of light a day without having to turn the product on and off by hand, I purchased locally and attached a seven-day timer. (Unfortunately, the corresponding timer for this product (sold separately) was not highly rated. A similar timer at amazon.com had problems with the instructions not corresponding to the boxed product.) I also added heating mats (one Hydrofarm pad and one plain old heating pad set to low, the setting necessary to register the 75 degree temp on the Hydrofarm pad) .
Note, too, I followed the advice of another reviewer. I microwaved for ten minutes my seed starting medium (reconstituted peat pellets). I tweaked the advice just a bit by adding extra water to the bottom of the ceramic pie plate containing the pellets, before microwaving.) I planted in the warm medium, undoubtedly an additional growth stimulant. (I did not soak any seeds overnight, something I routinely do for all but the tiniest of seeds in order to stimulate sprouting). I also have not treated with cinnamon, as the reviewer suggested for damping off, in part because in the past I have used a diluted chamomile tea solution instead. Since no scientific evidence exists for either cinnamon or chamomile preventing damping off, I am aiming through this purchase and the heating pads not only for quicker growth but also for drier soil conditions. After all, it is easier to revive a thirsty seedling, than an overwatered one... So far, so good. The soil conditions are much drier for the seedlings under light and over heat than for a batch I have stowed upstairs, basking in the much warmer kitchen. Do keep in mind that drier conditions also translate into more day-to-day vigilance.
