In addition, despite three hundred names on the Christmas card list, I don't know any married folks who can't benefit from an extra helping of intentionality (or time together!) in their relationship. I can testify to the destruction that bad marriages and divorce inflict on the family fisc. Elle Martinez works to address both these important topics.
At the outset, Couple Money focuses where we all need to focus: On understanding your Why with money, as a couple. From there the book tackles budgeting - both the income and the cost side of the family PnL - saving and investing, insurance, and debt elimination.
Having set the table with basic financial planning for couples and families, Elle serves up specific recommendations about travel hacking, planning and paying for children, and how to buy a home. Then, with a hat-tip to her squad in the blogosphere and podcast-landia, Elle brings in a primer on the FIRE movement.
The book is written to a mass audience - basically for those who are married or headed in that direction, and who have some desire to happen to their money, rather than having their money happen to them. It's not a geeky finance book, nor is it for those who are well down the road to mastering their money. In college terms, it's an 099 course that'll get you to the 102 or even the 201 level by the time you're done reading it.
But the best part of the book is the recommended couple money dates. If husbands and wives will do the dates, they will have a better handle on their money, they'll share some time together, and they'll cultivate communication in their marriage - a skill that can always benefit from practice and attention.
Thanks Elle, for your diligent contributions to helping married people do well in both life and money. Keep up the great work!
Real and practical advice that every couple needs to hear and do in their marriage.
