It is clear why Junction Boulevard was a Top 10 Finalist selected from over 2,600 entries in Simon & Schuster’s First Chapters competition! Way to go Mr. Scorpio!! Hope to see more work from you soon.
JUNCTION BOULEVARD captured my attention from the beginning, and each chapter had me running to the next. The bottom line for me was a good story with a strong energy flow. Along with a knack for humor and good descriptors, this author has a natural strength with pacing – energy. I just loved the pace and style driving the writing in this book – each section grabbed me and awakened my curiosity about what was going to happen next, how will the lives of Rico and Gavin come together? The author provides entertaining insights into the souls of these two vivid, sometimes controversial characters – not Hollywood stock characters, but rather complex, flawed humans who sometimes hold unpredictable emotions and take dangerous, unexpected actions. This unknowing aspect of the characters, particularly Rico’s, kept me on the edge with an urge to read more. And when it all comes together by the intense end of this novel, well, you know you’ve just read one heck of a thriller.
As a side-note, I think JUNCTION BOULEVARD would be ideal for a book club because the characters would invoke diverse opinions, and after a few lackluster book clubs I can assure that this lively novel would make for a welcoming and stimulating discussion.
In sum, a solid thriller and entertaining story, just when I needed it!
The writer of this novel, R.M. Scorpio is a very capable and very clever one I think, probably realizing that many people mostly have time to read books on the commute these days. This book is practically made for commuters. Setting much of the book’s action on subway stations and platforms adds a sense of realism to this crime-thriller. Also, there is an episodic nature to the book that makes it an easy read and gives the reader many jump-off and jump-back-on points. The novel is a healthy size, and good quality of writing, such a great deal for the price. R.M. Scorpio’s writing style and the characters in the novel are very engaging – you will be amazed how quickly you can get through the book.
Each of the chapters is short and alternates the narrative, switching back and forth between the two main characters’ voices. The writer uses this intriguing structure to carefully progress the story and builds suspense very effectively, sometimes hiding or showing little details to the reader to keep us guessing. The plot is fresh and unique and the writer knows how to keep dialogue realistic but showcase each character’s personality very well. There are some well-written female characters with a strong voice that are of vital importance and drive the plot of this book as well, which surprised me as you don’t see that enough in novels these days. There are some gripping and surprising moments and a lot of unexpected violence and dark situations, so it is certainly not a children’s book, but for a crime or suspense thriller it has all the elements you need to be very well entertained – and it is much more thoughtful and profound than your average thriller. There is definitely evidence of a master storyteller here and that was the most pleasant surprise of all.
If you need a great new book to keep you entertained during the commute or during business travel, maybe even while on vacation this summer, and especially if you are looking for a fun read that has many clever, well-written twists and turns, I would highly recommend you read and enjoy R.M. Scorpio’s novel “Junction Boulevard”. Junction Boulevard: A Novel
