Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Pre-Grade 1–In this cumulative picture book, Elephant wants to swim in the pond, so he chases Hippo away. Hippo forces Lion to move so that he can get by, and Lion chases Leopard out of his favorite spot. Leopard forces Monkey out of the tree, and he runs to Mama, who advises him to stand up for himself. With her help, he tells Leopard, Don't you tell me what to do, this tree's big enough for two. Share it with me as a friend, don't be mean to me again. This rhythmic refrain is repeated as each animal, with the help of his new friends, stands up to the bigger bully until all of the creatures are playing together in the pond. The watercolor and charcoal spreads with digital techniques are inviting and simple while conveying the animals' fear and then remorse when confronted. The predictable recurring text makes this a good read-aloud and a helpful way to introduce the topic to children.–Kristine M. Casper, Huntington Public Library, NY

Jungle Bullies written by Steven Kroll and Vincent Nguyen and illustrated by Vincent Nguyen begins with an elephant moving a hippo out of the watering hole and then one by one the bigger animals pick on a smaller one until the smallest stands up for himself. I read this to my four-year-old son (recommended age is six and up, but it seems to be geared towards four to seven). He picked this one mostly because we enjoy animal stories. The cover art represents the cute and colorful illustrations--they look beautiful on the Kindle. Still the best thing about this story is the message. It gives kids a script to deal with bullying and reinforces that it is more fun to share. It also broaches the idea that once your bullied you are more likely to bully others which is a good starting point for further conversation with older kids. We'll read this one again and again.

This children's book delivers in every aspect. It has beautiful illustrations, whimsical characters, a rhyming chorus, and an important message about bullying. It tells of a chain of bullying prompted by one elephant that finally ends with one little monkey. With the help of his mom, monkey gathers the courage to stand up to his own bully, leopard. This prompts leopard to question his own actions and stand up to the one who bullied him. As all the animals gather courage and join together, it eventually reaches back to the original bully. All the jungle animals come to the realization that working together and sharing are much more enjoyable than bullying.
With the rich colorful, illustrations and rhyming chorus repeated throughout the text, it definitely keeps a child's attention and hammers home the message. Children learn to anticipate what is coming next and join in. It was a winner with my two-year-old and I foresee us reading it again and again.

My son was about to start Kindergarten and I was looking for ways to help him learn to deal with bullies if he was going to encounter any... to help me feel less anxious about it, and so he'd know what to do. This book is fun and really gives a positive spin on bullies... helping a child get the words to tell a bully "don't talk to me like that... lets be friends instead". I like that the animals take "a deep breath" before saying what they say to the bully - it was a good talking point with my son, to show that taking a breath when you are nervous or scared can help give you more courage.
I used to teach kindergarten and would recommend this book to all children in preK/K/1st who are looking for ways to deal with bullies.

I originally picked this book because my daughter is slightly elephant obsessed and I am always on the lookout for good elephant stories. This book is very good for preschool aged children and maybe up to age or so, depending on maturity level. I think it does an excellent job of introducing children to how to handle bullying. The repetitive aspect is just that, which can get annoying sometimes, but it is very effective for children. The illustrations are great. Overall, I recommend this book.

I thought this book was great. It is wrote so small children can understand what bulling is and what to do so the child doesn't get bullied again. By having the child goto the parents for help great idea so they will not be afraid to talk to their parents .I let my 5 year old kindergarten grandson have it read to his class and the kids loved the book. My other grandchildren read the book also and they loved it,too.Thank you and happy reading.............................................Patricia Irion

I thought using the animals as an analogy for kids being bullied was great! I actually used this book at one of my programs for kids.

My logical/analytical side can't help but notice that monkeys, leopards, lions, hippos, and elephants aren't likely to be chummy, even when it's pointed out that it's not nice to be a bully ... but my 2-year-old likes it, and I don't feel a need to curse the author after having read it ... multiple times. It's at least 3 stars, maybe more if you think that a book about animal bullies is actually going to help your kid straighten out his months-old life.

This book is fun to read to my grandchildren and it is an animal story they love. The repetiveness of some phrases makes it fun for the kids to remember the story.

Odd, wont download to Kindle!

For a Kindle purchase it is odd that it wont download to a Kindle! It is ok on the Kindle app on an Ipad, so I am presuming the interactive/colour element is the reason.
Can't moan for a quid though!
