My Rating: 4.5 stars *****
This book took me a while to get through because of it's length. I genuinely liked the main plot, and the characters. I can relate to Juniper and her dislike for most modern things, and her reclusive tendencies. Kyle's character is an overbearing alpha, which can have it's appeal. I felt like there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and dialogue, at points it felt like it maybe rambled a bit. I definitely understand the need to build the characters and backstories, it felt as if some it could have been edited down, and that's where it lost a star for me. Overall I did enjoy the story, but did do some skimming to get to the end.
When a trusted author friend recommended this book to me, I immediately downloaded it and dove right in. Wait, I thought, this book is how long??! ‘Juniper Smoke’ is an odyssey, a fantastic, sexy, funny, smart and heart-stopping journey that I never wanted to end.
“I, Juniper Mills, always run away from the people I love. It is the story and sequel of my life.”
There is just so much to love about this book that I want to yell from the rooftops for everyone to read it! Juniper might be one of the sassiest, wittiest and smartest heroines I have read in a long time. She is simply a breath of fresh air. And Kyle Paxton, OMG KYLE!! Where do I even begin. In a sea of billionaire bachelors and dark heroes, he is a standout. I will never forget him. Poor, wealthy, lonely Kyle. Forget everything you know about reading contemporary romance novels because Sadia Ash just threw it all out the window. Her characters are fresh, damaged, strong, lonely and smart.
“Will you please leave? And stop looking up.”
“Give me a reason to stop looking up.”
Great. A Comedy Central reject. “Are you one of the waiters?”
“Hmm. Telekinesis. I think I’ve found my soul mate.”
There is so much to say about this book. The basics are that Juniper (yes, named after the tree) is a junior curator at a museum in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Kyle Paxton is a wealthy investor who founded a tech start-up company at a very young age. He is sexy and gorgeous and geeky and does not have normal relationships with women. But Juniper is basically a goner from the minute they meet.
“He laughed and it was a pleasant deep-throated sound. He held me so close, it vibrated in my body. Wow. If I could record and harness Kyle’s remarkable laugh all the world’s babies would stop crying and maybe the adults would be moved to work for peace. I felt happiness I had never known before. Then I got sad, for very soon I would never see this hot and mysterious stranger again.”
Lonely Juniper has been raised by a single mother who has had a hard life and so taught Juniper that men and relationships were to be avoided. So she finds herself unable to connect with men at the ripe old age of 26. Friends, yes, a great job, yes, but this geeky girl runs in the other direction where men are concerned.
"See, I was raised to hate men. My mother didn’t raise me to believe in fairytales. Only unfairy tales."
Kyle is as smitten with Juniper as she is with him. But this delicious, slow-burn romance takes its time with the characters and the story and by the time these two get together, I was addicted to their story.
"Okay, there it was. I was outed in my mind. I want Kyle Paxton. And getting him was as easy as collecting the Pacific Ocean in a teacup. I was screwed."
Sadia Ash’s writing is sharp, biting, funny and verrrrry sexy. In fact, the only complaint I have about ‘Juniper Smoke’ is that it ended! I even liked Kyle, although at many times he came across as cold and calculating. It was part of his charm but he did frustrate me at times.
"His expression grew distant again. “No. I’ve already said too much. Don’t read too much into it, Juniper. I make my decisions on human capital quickly. When I meet people, I know at once if I want to work with them and if I want to be with them.”
There is a LOT to absorb in this book but I absolutely loved the how the settings changed, from frosty Michigan to California and back again. Every chapter was richly drawn and seemed vital to the story. The connection between Juniper and Kyle was as breathtaking as it was tinged with sadness. I really felt the emotional connection between the characters here and the author made them come alive for me.
A lump formed in my throat, for despite the blank way he spoke, I felt the ache in his voice, the loneliness in his words, and the vulnerability in his eyes. I had never seen him falter from his alpha-male façade at any time, and so this fragmented man in front of me was fascinating. Intriguing. Complex. Just my type. Danger bells again.
The story was creative and unexpected and surprised me at every turn. It is filled with people, places and things that all have meaning. I was completely taken aback at the ending and cannot wait until the next part of Juniper and Kyle’s story comes out! I will read anything that Sadia Ash writes. If you are looking for a book that is far and away different from any other romance out there, then read ‘Juniper Smoke’ and prepare to fall in love with these characters!
“Real life has tears and stupid emotions and mess and dirt and filth and drama that go with every beautiful thing we do. There is beauty in everything that falls. Like this.”
I’m not sure if the author meant for Juniper to be super immature or if she just has no concept of how to write. But no woman dedicated to her job and not partying or relationships speaks in a professional environment the way this one does.
My head hurts from the lemmes didjas etc etc.
please let it be over soon.

I started reading on Saturday early evening. Why? Why did I do that? I stayed awake all night long reading, and into the next morning, and by the time I put it down my eyes were burning - I don't know was it from tiredness, or emotion, or just sheer what the hell did this author just do to me frustration. But holy smokes - if you haven't read this series, you need to pretty much drop everything else on your Kindle and pick it up and jump in. Straight away.
Juniper, the lead female, is totally, completely cracked and I just absolutely adored her random impulsive dance moments - made me think of Yang and Grey on Greys Anatomy having dance offs, and her emotional jerky reactions every time something poked at those frustrated feelings of hers, and then we have the soft side, the blushing shy side, and the bursts of anger. And so insecure.
WITH GOOD REASON
WHAT IS KYLE PAXTON PLAYING AT
He is the most frustrating, likeable, angry-emotion-making character ever. Think like Christian Grey meets Rune meets freakin' Gale from the Hunger Games. And what do you have? I don't know, I don't know. You have Paxton. Who you want to strangle and kiss and screw and hug and comfort and lick all at the same time. Help?
Juniper and Kyle meet when she's stuck on a creaky, unstable scaffolding in the middle of her museum display floor, which he has picked a lock to break in the back way too. Their relationship that follows resembles the scaffolding in more ways than one. I wish I could do a better review. I can't. I hope my review for Finding Juniper is better because honestly right now my mind is just a melting pot of blank nothingness. Sadia took my emotions and reactions, twisted them together and fecked them to the bottom of an ocean somewhere. Thanks for that Sadia. What a ride.
If you have doubts about reading this book, don't. But also don't do it while you're like in the middle of something. It will get left by the wayside xD
Juniper who is lovely is totally mad! She cannot seem to have a decent relationship at all let alone a romantic one! Kyle is the exception to the rule in her defence as he is beyond messed up. However, I really struggled with the constant insecurity shown by Juniper. It was at break neck speed and I feel physically exhausted! I just don`t think I have it in me to wait for part 3 where she goes off to London for 6 months and realises her mentor is after her, her waking moments are spent feeling sorry for herself baring in mind she was self sabotaging the whole way through 2 previous books and then when the light goes on and she realises she should have just been grateful for the relationship she had and not let the scheming bitch Denise burst her happy bubble she will return and beg and pled to be back with Kyle. No I'm sorry I just don`t have it in me!
It would have been great but I'm just not good with a flaky childish female leads! I actually felt sorry for Kyle towards the end as he must have been fed up with the constant bleating on about his past! I just wanted to bitch slap her! If you get it just be prepared for a long drawn out story! Kinda like climbing mount Everest and getting to the top only to find its a cloudy day!
Juniper Smoke by Sadia Ash is definitely one of those books where the saying ‘you should never judge a book by its cover’ completely applies! I admit I often chose a book based on what it looks like but I am so glad that I chose to read this book! I was totally hooked from the very first page and it was not what I was expecting at all! Be prepared this book is long but it is also totally worth it! It was slow paced but the detail the author has put into this book makes it such a brilliant read. The character development is excellent and I feel as though I know the characters inside and out. I really felt a connection with them. The book is written from the POV of Juniper and although we do get some parts about Kyle specifically they are written in the third person which for me I found really interesting but I found that it actually suited Kyle’s character perfectly – kind of cold and closed off. I wasn’t sure about it at first but the more I read on I realised just what a clever piece of writing it was! I was also pleasantly surprised to find after that this was the authors debut novel and what a debut! This is definitely an author to watch out for!
The story contained in the book is in two parts. In the first part of story we meet Juniper and Kyle and follow their relationship. I really liked Juniper. She was really down to earth and just an all-round lovely person. She had a tough time growing up and certain things that happened during that time have made her wary of romantic/sexual relationships. She spends her time caring for her mother and twin brother and I loved the relationship that she had with Cypress, her brother. Juniper thinks that she is the ultimate nerd being that her job is a junior curator at a museum but I loved her passion that she had and that really came across in her job and the way in which she spoke about things. I loved Junipers reaction to Kyle when she first met him – it really made me laugh. Junipers story was really easy to follow as she wore her heart on her sleeve, she wasn’t afraid to say what she wanted for her future – whereas Kyle’s character was a lot different. I found myself intrigued by him. His character was very deep and hard to unravel but I think that made me like him even more. They were both so different but you know that you just wanted them to be together. I think because the story is in the majority told from Junipers POV with only small parts about Kyle his character remained quite closed off which kept an air of mystery about him. Part 2 of the story is where we really start to find out more about Kyle. Still written the same as part 1 but his dedicated parts begin to get longer and I finally started to understand why Kyle was the way he was and the reasoning behind his lifestyle. I loved reading more about the relationship between Juniper and Kyle.
There were so many twists and turns in this book that not once did I lose interest in it. I was completely captivated by their story and I cannot wait for the next part to come out. There are still questions left unanswered, secondary characters that I hope we get to see more of and definitely more to come with Juniper and Kyle!
I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it!!
