One thing I absolutely LOVED about this saga was KYLE. He was not the typical CEO alpha male I'm used to reading quite often and that alone had me truly loving his character. He didn't just crave control, he needed it. He needed to know how everything in his life would pan-out, down to the last second. It was interesting "being inside his head" and seeing how he calculated his every move! His nerdy side was also very refreshing; made the banter between him and Juniper all that much funnier — as in laugh-out-loud funny!
I can surely say this is a book I highly recommend! The author's writing style is also amazing and easy to follow and connect with! FIVE STARS!
Juniper is a sassy and nerdy museum senior curator with an autistic twin brother that tied her to her home in Ann Arbor and afraid of all men (due to experience in high school). She met Kyle Paxton, a tech mogul with an extremely dysfunctional family, and her world changed. Kyle was deeply wounded by his own dark past with an ex-GF named Chloe, and came up with a system of 6 month companion system: all companions have to sign a NDA, then a contract that set an expiration date on the relationship, and his companions are all beautiful and well compensated. And he wanted Juniper to be his next. Juniper saw the system as extremely exploitative, trying to put an expiration date on feelings, and refused, even though Kyle was the only one she thought she would want. As Juniper eventually gave in to Kyle's wooing attempts even as he realized his system would not work on her, Juniper started to discover secrets about Kyle that can destroy their relationship forever.
I enjoy the constant push pull between the two characters even as I realized this is just another variation of "small town girl falls for billionaire", but this variation was so well done and devoid of the usual tropes (or so well disguised and polished I didn't care) I find the character dynamics fascinating. I guess I was hoping for a slightly faster pace (as some of the stuff does drag a bit) and an HEA that I can't give this a 5/5.
Juniper is a nerdy and conflicted character. Raised to be a man-hater, but filled with pure compassion and curiosity, she doesn't know where exactly she fits in the modern world. Kyle is the definition of modern. Robotic in his scheduling and precision, he runs his life with the idea that planning his interactions down to the second will create ease and a lack of drama. Kyle and Juniper could not be further from opposite, however, as their worlds begin to collide, neither one is sure how to navigate the electricity between them. Nor the dangers of the vindictive people from their pasts from tearing them apart.
At first, I had thought that perhaps the themes were a bit cliche. Rich single, city guy + Struggling, independent small town girl fighting a strange and new chemistry. However, even then, the personality that came through from Ms. Ash’s characters was impossible to deny. I was instantly connected to all of the players in Ann Arbor. Ash’s character development was amazing. They are some the most raw and real characters that I have ever read. In other romances, depth of this kind took entire series to create. Then, as I kept reading, I was pulled in more and more by the depth and details woven through the story. Ash has created a total 360 degree experience with this romance. I am so glad I purchased this book, and will be shelving it among my favorite love stories and I'll be eagerly awaiting book 3!
