Do they work? Yes.
The tablets are certainly a necessity if you have hard water, and they do seem to do the job. The cleaning tablets do not produce the same results, so you cannot substitute.
Descaling the Jura Capresso Automatic coffee-maker is necessary if you have hard water, which we do. Not only does our water leave white lines in the water tank (which do disappear after the descaling process) but the coffee is noticeably cooler over time. I get the best HOT cup of coffee right after a descaling was done. I do not use the filter insert, because let's face it, the darn tank is small enough as is. I don't want to have to fill it twice each morning. Also with the filter in place, the machine does not keep track of scale build-up.
Would another product work?
I suspect so, but I am too chicken to try it out. The Jura is a tad expensive to experiment with.
I suppose I could use bottled water or deionized water to make coffee with, and avoid having to use the descaling tablets, or at least cut down on the frequency of having to go through the descaling procedure, but deep down I know that's just too much to ask for BEFORE I had a cup of coffee.
If you need the descalers and find a good deal, buy in bulk, they last.
Cheaper and better to use purified water so you can descale once a year instead of every month. Coffee tastes better too.
Someone noted it left a bad flavor. This stuff is poison so rinse. I always rinse twice the recommended cycles.
We LOVE our Jura! And what can you say about these, other than they do their job and they keep our machine making good coffee.
You do need to use three tablets per cleaning, so this nine-pack ends up only being useful for about three cleaning cycles. We make about 5-10 shots of espresso a day with our Jura, and a package of these lasts about eight months, so the price isn't too bad.
After some research i found that I needed to de-scale my machine due to the buildup of minerals that the Jura filters did not catch. After two sessions of de-scaling, the machine worked much better.
Each de-scaling session utilizes two tabs - there are six tabs included (two in each blister). Make sure to dissolve in a separate container with warm water prior to placing into the reservoir. I have also found that after the de-scaling process was complete, that I needed to run a full tank of water through the tap to rinse it (after the normal rinsing cycle) to remove any odd tastes.
Now that I have figured this out, i will be de-scaling my machine at least twice a year to maintain.

It does what it does, at a stupidly high price to match the costly Jura machines. Even so, the coffee is great.Published 20 days ago by Mark in Santa Monica
If you use the Jura filter with the setting correctly adjusted on your machine, you should not need to descale. Read morePublished 1 month ago by B. Price
