Shared trauma can bring people together or burn down every thread of their relationship.
The four friends, each a point of view character in the novel, discover much about each other and themselves as the story unfolds. JUST BETWEEN US is the kind of thriller that makes a reader think upon her own life and the decisions and events that shaped her as a person, and the person she could be if other paths were taken. The story also make me consider how my friends view me, how I view them, and how our relationship might change if all our secrets were revealed.
Having grown up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, I enjoyed how Drake made the setting come alive. For example, she describes a stone church, black with steel mill soot that if sandblasted away would leave etchings that resembled black lace.
JUST BETWEEN US is the kind of book that would play out fabulously on the big screen. I look forward to reading Drake’s other works.
