Beverly Stowe McClure accomplishes something that very few young adult authors can do: She creates a protagonist who appeals to both boys and girls. Breeze Brannigan is tall, awkward, sarcastic--and oddly enough, she can fix anything. With the help of Breeze's guy friends and brother, the storyline broaches gender-crossing topics like cars and football. But girls won't be disappointed; there are plenty of chick lit moments: best friend chats, makeovers, and most importantly, first kisses and first love.
I recommend this novel for young teens, or anyone who wants to relive the middle years through the eyes of Breeze Brannigan. It's a fun, fast read, and my only complaint is there is not a sequel...yet!
Author Beverly Stowe McClure has created in Breeze a character that is refreshingly innocent, yet displays a wicked sense of humor and ability to laugh at her own foibles. Is there a fairy tale ending for Breeze and Cam? I'm not telling. What I will say is that as a young girl, I would have LOVED this book. I highly recommend it for girls ages 10 and up.
I really enjoyed the story. I had no problem relating to the main character and her battles. (I have always been short and worn glasses.) The way she writes about Breeze makes you love her for being human. The story continues moving, allowing little opportunity to put the book down or get bored. In fact, I don't often get to read a book all the way through in just a couple of days, but I picked this one up at ever spare moment until I finished it. Very few books gain that much attention from me, lately. This was a nice change. I have put in a request for more of Beverly's books at our local library, because I love her writing style. I'm hoping my next read will be Life on Hold.
I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
