GAMEPLAY
Just Cause 2 starts off with a bang showcasing you much of what it has to offer in a short linear sequence. Here you will learn how your grapple hook works, parachute, how to mount cars, leash them into trees or into one another etc. After the initial introduction to the carnage you can bring the game becomes the sandbox style. Areas of the map will be marked showing there is "something" there but what it is... that is for you to find out! Hijack cars, climb mountains, or become your own transportation by combining the grapple and your parachute. There of course is story missions to do but there is no time limit for them. You can take as long as you like before starting them and odds are you might find 5-6hrs of random stuff to do before you even arrive at the destination. Often I found myself traveling to a location only to stumble across an airport or military base and just had to blow it up! I mean the chaos level was 0% that just isn't enough! Chaos is rewarded to you the more you cause. Blowing up structures and completing missions grants more Chaos... more Chaos brings you closer to unlocking more main missions (like 15,000 chaos might unlock faction missions, 7000 chaos more you unlock the next storyline) This leads to a small problem I ran into which I will explain in the negatives portion below. Ontop of storyline missions , side objectives aka blowing up anything that moves you also have faction missions. Securing a faction base is like securing a respawn/reload point. More you got the less painful dying will feel as you don't have a crazy distance to travel.
GRAPHICS / SOUND
The graphics in this game are actually very very good. The physics is impressive and the background and interactions are amazing. When falling 1000 meters you actually feel like you are falling and could almost feel the wind and speed. The real time environment is pretty sick also as it uses a day/night cycle. Just stand around in game and you can watch the Sun move across the sky and slowly set. while the "world" graphics are spot on when you zoom in on the action aka cut-scenes you clearly can tell the graphics dropped like 3 notches. While it isn't bad, a little more polish might of made for more eye friendly cut-scenes. *** Audio wise the game is pretty good. The voice acting is a bit stereotypical almost as if they were faking the accent on the characters. The gun, car, explosions etc all are awesome! The audio effects help keep you immersed rather than become an annoying distraction. If anything the cut-scene dialogue might be the only thing that irked me.
STORY / REPLAY
Just Cause 2 is a Sequel to Just Cause, storyline wise I never played Just Cause so I am not sure if this is a continuation of the storyline or a brand new storyline; I just know Rico was in both games. Story wise the game has an average storyline at best. I didn't find myself rushing to continue it pondering what the next turn of events might bring. The storyline just felt like it was there to guide you to new areas of the map to cause more destruction(and I'm all for that!). As for replay value, unless you are going for trophies I don't see why you would even need to start a brand new game unless you want to re-blow up the hundreds of areas to invade all over again. There is enough content here to last well over 50 hours. By the 18hr mark I was barely 20% done with the game.
OVERALL (88% 8.8/B+)
Just Cause 2 is a fabulous game that brings plenty of gameplay and action to the table. The map is absolutely massive to the point that I stole a fighter jet and it still took me 10 or so REAL TIME minutes to travel from one end to the other w/o using the drop system to save time. While JC2 isn't a perfect game, and some dialogue and events get repetitive there is just so much to do that you can't really hate on the fact stuff got reused. A must buy for the sandbox lover and even for a casual fan of just maximum carnage causing ^_^
PROS
- Open world and then some. Just an ungodly mount of stuff to do.
- Lots of variety to the ways you can destroy or accomplish certain objectives
- 3 different sets of faction missions, plus storyline missions help give a 'change of pace' from hours upon hours of mindless destruction
- Grapple hook is nonstop fun; especially when you grapple a soldier to a moving car ^_^
- Simple upgrading system by finding armor, weapon, vehicle parts and can use them to improve armor, weapons or vehicles
- Lots of collectible items for the factions for those who just gotta get 100% !
CONS
- As said above, one small bug I ran into was if I did an insane amount of CHAOS after everything was capped (unlocked the next faction missions, storyline etc) All the chaos I began to earn didn't carry over into the next upgrade bar which made it harder for me to unlock the next stuff (since all the extra splosive stuff was now sploded :( )
- Cut-scene dialogue irked me (probably the fake accents)
- I would get sad when I'd parachute into an area that was 0% only to find out all I had to do was pick up 2 armor crates and 1 weapon crate. q_q nothing to blow up!
This is an awesome open-world third-person shooter with MONTHS of play value!!!
Your character is some kind of South American operative at large in a LARGE island country ruled by evil dictators. Or something like that -- I'm more interested in the missions and random mayhem than the back story!
The more mayhem you create -- CHAOS! -- by blowing up government installations, the more missions you are awarded by various revolutionary groups scattered around the country.
The controls are spot-on, you have access to lots of weaponry and vehicles -- include choppers and fighter jets -- and the graphics are excellent. And did I say the country is HUGE? Well, maybe not as big as the US of A, but it's big enough to encompass a variety of terrain from snow-capped mountains to beaches to lush jungles.
At a price of under $20, the purchase of this game is an absolute no-brainer and IMO one of the best values in gaming. And I haven't even tried the online multiplayer.
Highly recommended for fans of blast-'em-up shooting action!
UPDATE: I have put in more than 80 hours playing this game so far, and there still is a ton more to discover -- and blow up! In fact, I saw a message stating that I had only discovered about half the locations available on the island. That means I can expect more than 160 hours of single-player playtime in this game, and it's all killer, no filler!
IMO this is one of the most fun open-world third-person shooters I have ever played, the lack of funny radio stations in the vehicles notwithstanding. If you like shooters, you REALLY need to play Just Cause 2!!! And NO, I don't work for any of the developers responsible for the game...
UPDATE NUMBER TWO: I just have to emphasize my enthusiasm for this game again. I have played a ton of video games since the days of ColecoVision (!), and I don't know when I have ever spent so many enjoyable hours playing a single game. I have now put in well over 100 hours of game time here, and the end is nowhere in sight! The ONLY downside is I know I am going to experience MAJOR withdrawal symptoms when I do finally beat Just Cause 2. Fortunately I have also heard whisperings that Just Cause 3 will be coming in 2015, and I for one will be elbowing others out of the way to pick up a copy. Did I say this game rocks? Yes, I did, up, down, over, and under, inside and out. Scorpio! Scorpio! Pick up a copy, and you'll see what I'm getting so excited about. (And did I mention I'm an old geezer who doesn't get excited about very much these days?)
UPDATE NUMBER THREE: Yikes -- I just passed 124 hours playing this game when I received a trophy "Halfway Through" or something like that! That suggests that the single-player game here can consume 250 hours of your life, delivering the thrills of driving, flying, shooting bad guys, and blowing up the government installations of an evil dictatorship! All for under $20! What's not to like here? And I haven't even tried the online game...

This game is like GTA IV but 30X better as it's HUGE. There r main story missions and lots of open free world roaming and conquering to do on this massive island. Fly airplanes, helicopters, perform stunts on the planes, kill army men and blow stuff open...does it get any better than this?
If you love open world games, you gotta get this game.
I simply love it and I truly wish the developers make a Just Cause 3 very soon.
After you beat the game, you almost wish it didn't finish...that's how much I enjoyed it.
5/5 Stars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Brief, I was looking for a game to take my mind off work(strangely i'm in the videogame business héhéh), and I found this near perfect sandbox game to raise hell and be a stunt man.
I definitely recommend this game to those who aren't looking for a tripple A storyline, but rather just a game to have fun blowing up a vast quantity of things.
