I appreciate the hard topic of post-partum depression that the author chose to take on. I also appreciate the "historical" accuracy and plopping us right into a different time and place. I appreciated the scenery and descriptions of every-day life for the main character.
However, like another reviewer said, so many things went wrong and were depressing that it was hard to read and not feel a little discouraged. I also had a hard time with the choppy scenes. For instance, ClaireLee would throw up seemingly for no reason, and worry about her dirty dress, and then suddenly she's back home doing chores. It felt like the ongoing traumatic circumstances were not totally explored and richly sat in and portrayed in all their emotional upheaval - everything except scenes dealing with her mother. Depth in the book was devoted to ClaireLee's strange and challenged mother. And, even with that, both parents keep ClaireLee in the dark for so very long.
I would've preferred maybe even dealing with a single difficult situation and sitting on that, instead of jumping from one hardship to the next without really exploring the ramifications and letting us catch our breath.
The author's characters are all unique and personable though, and there isn't a cardboard one among them. You felt for each and every one for sure - there were just maybe quite a few characters to feel sorry for, and it left me feeling a bit hopeless.
If this has been your experience - dealing with post-partum depression, bi-polar, or handling a family member who suffers - I would recommend this book.
When the baby is finally born, Claire’s father rushes mother and baby off to the hospital, leaving Clair to clean up the terrifying blood, and reassure for her three younger siblings. Claire grows up fast, dealing with a new school and its new bullies, while single-handedly caring for her sister and two brothers. And things don’t get any better when her mentally fragile mother finally comes home.
Told in the voice of a strong but overwhelmed young girl, Just Claire is a wonderful tale of the power of love over mental illness.
