The new Megastars (earned with 12,000+) in addition to Superstars (earned with 11,000+) is really cool. There don't seem to be as many tricky moves (except for the extreme alternates) as there were in 2017, and the scoring doesn't seem to penalize as heavily for subtle mistakes. It seems like it was designed to make it more reasonable for players to enjoy the new Megastars feature. There are enough challenges in the choreographies to separate the 12,000's from the 13,000's and the 13,000's from the 13,300's, so the game still provides differentiation between different levels of dancers and still challenges the top dancers to learn all the little subtleties well. But it seems to be more reasonable for the recreational dancer, and it seems to be more about how well you can pull of the moves (as opposed to whether you can figure out the trick behind a clever move). I like this.
Another change with the scoring is the score of Super between Good and Perfect. It's nice to have a new positive score. Now there are two negative scores (X and Okay) to go with three positive scores (Good, Super, and Perfect). The scoring in Kids mode is even more positive, as it just gives expressions and doesn't make you feel penalized after doing a move. It's more of frustration-free dancing, great for kids.
I love the song selection and the choreographies. Several hit songs are included, like Despacito, Shape of You, Side to Side, Rockabye, and 24K Magic. But I actually like the content all around. There is good variety, and personally I didn't find anything that I wouldn't mind dancing to throughout the year. A few of my favorites include Got That, Instruction, and Blue. A couple of dances feature cool concepts, like In the Hall of the Pixel King (the dance is like playing a video game) and the alternate version of Another One Bits the Dust (the dancer is like an action spy who dropped onto the roof of a car from a helicopter).
The dance machine feature has improved. You don't see the aliens any more, but the great thing is that you can see your score on each episode. You can also dance to any episode (once it is unlocked).
Another improvement is how the mojo and rewards work. There is a mojo machine that looks like a gumball machine. First of all, they reduced the amount of mojo that you earn to a reasonable value. Very often, you earn around 100 points, instead of thousands. Second of all, you can redeem your mojo for rewards every time you earn 100 mojo. You don't earn avatars and skins with game progress (except for boss battles). Now you put 100 mojo in the mojo machine and it gives you a random reward. The rewards include unlocking alternate versions, avatars, skins, and stickers (with a reward for earning all of the stickers).
The menu is much simpler now. After choosing Kinect Sensor or Phone, you have three choices: Kids mode, Just Dance, and World Dance Floor. While in Just Dance, you can toggle back and forth between regular mode and sweat mode (there is no longer a separate place to go for sweat mode). Similarly, dance machine episodes are now in Just Dance.
One useful feature that appears to be gone is Video Challenges. (Either that or I just haven't unlocked this feature yet, but I don't see mention of it on the product description or cover.) Since Just Dance works on Nintendo Switch, too, and since the Switch doesn't support Video Challenges, I'm guessing that this feature was removed. It was helpful to watch your video and opponents' video in the past, but since there don't seem to be so many tricky moves, it's not as essential (if you want this for unlimited dances, you can use 2016 or 2017 instead). It's easy enough to make video of yourself: For example, most phones, laptops, and tablets will record video these days. (However, as of now, the World Dance Floor still has the "Tip" that you can get spotlighted by sharing a video challenge. So either I'm wrong about it being missing, or that message needs to be updated. If there any comments to my review, perhaps someone else will have either found where the video challenge feature is or will have confirmed that it's gone.)
Note that when you first open the game, it won't yet be fully functional. You must dance to 4-5 songs before you see things like dance machine episodes, sweat mode options, the mojo machine, and options for your dancer card. You can't even check ranks or friends' scores until you've danced to about 5 songs.
I'm a little older than most dancers, and my knees and shins get sore easily. I found a 2" thick gymnastics mat that helps a lot. If like me you'd like a thick mat, I recommend searching for gym mat, and not searching for dance mat or exercise mat. Most of the dance and exercise mats are much thinner and less effective (I've tried them and they didn't help nearly as much). I had also tried one of those foam aerobics mats, but it was too flimsy (flying away when I danced) and didn't offer as much support as a padded 2" thick gymnastics mat. (I also dance in socks now on most songs—except when I really need good traction, like Don't Wanna Know's back and forth motions from 2017—since I can lift my feet up faster off of a thick mat without shoes on. The mat has been that good that I don't even need the support of shoes now.)
I recommend Xbox One with Kinect over Wii U and Switch for players who expect to hit high scores (Superstars and Megastars). The Kinect sensor really puts a premium on nailing the full-body choreography, and I know I'm dancing well when I hit a high score. For many of the Unlimited dances, however, the Kinect sensor makes the dance much harder. For many of the pre-2018 dances, the Wii remote, phone, or Switch joy-con is a friendlier way for kids or recreational users to dance along. For the 2018 dances, I would recommend Kinect for adults and older kids who expect to hit 5 stars on every song. For the serious dancer, note that many of the top players use Xbox Kinect, and some also use both Kinect and Switch (the Switch places a premium on smoothness and timing, while Kinect places a premium on full-body choreography, so if you can hit top scores on both platforms, that really says something). Note that for the online World Cup qualifiers, Ubisoft curves the scores so that you still have a chance to qualify regardless of which platform you use (because of this, it's possible that you could even rank higher with the platform where you overall score would be lower: fortunately, there are usually multiple online sessions, so you could actually try it multiple ways if you own the game on multiple platforms). It's easier to find tips for Xbox, as you just need to find videos of actual dancers on YouTube and focus on the move you're struggling with.
Regarding Just Dance Unlimited, you can find many of the 2017, 2016, and 2014 dances included. The 2017 dances were added with the release of 2018. (Unfortunately, they are still missing some of the 2015 dances like Black Widow, Diamonds, Dark Horse, Problem, Love Me Again, Me and My Broken Heart, and What Does the Fox Say. However, there are over 300 songs in Unlimited, and since most of the 2016 and 2017 dances are there, you can find a lot of great songs to dance to.)
(It's a shame that this can't be a "verified" review. I actually preordered the digital version from Amazon, but they notified me at the last minute that they were "out" of codes and canceled my order, so I had to buy it directly from Xbox instead...)
The only complaint I have is to Microsoft regarding the Kinect. We bought an Xbox one X without realizing that a special adapter would be needed to connect the Kinect. Unfortunately, Microsoft recently decided to discontinue this adapter and the game experience is very very different using the Kinect and a phone. Holding a phone is just silly and there is no way that I am going to let my kids hold a phone while they dance. A definite recipe for a broken phone.
Side note: although the tracking seems to be good at times...other times it's questionable...for example, I got 1/4 of my kid's score by sitting behind her on the couch and typing??? Explain that to me...
In 2016 and 2017 I knocked the game a little bit for its poor implementation of the controller dance method. I found it to have accuracy problems and the girls preferred the Kinect over having to hold a controller.
In 2018, Just Dance returns with an updated playlist of 44 new songs including ones that my daughter loves (specifically Bruno Mars and some Ed Sheeran!) However, just like in 2017, the girls still prefer the Kinect controller over trying to connect a smartphone (or their iPod) and using that as a controller. It still seems "awkward" to them to hold something while they dance. I recognize that this is a way for the Just Dance series to take advantage of EVERY console out there (especially the new Nintendo Switch), not just the ones that have a Kinect, but the design simply isn't resonating with the kids. I'm concerned with this as Microsoft has discontinued the Kinect and I'm not sure how much longer the Kinect will continue to work for this series. By far, everyone prefers the Kinect to the phone in hand method.
I mentioned the 2 songs earlier that they dance to...yes there are 44 songs on there, but the girls aren't quite familiar with the other ones. Just Dance continues to push their "Just Dance Unlimited" package for $29 a year as an add-on which will give you access to the entire database of songs. Unfortunately having a $30 subscription on top of buying the game isn't in the cards for me. Good news for parents....buying the game includes a 3 month subscription to JDU but you should note that you have to play 4 regular songs on the game first before your trial will unlock (along with a lot of other features in the game).
I break this years game down like this:
-My daughter and her friends can play this game for hours and that itself is worth it's weight in gold for me.
-I'd rather my kids be dancing around burning calories than sitting on the couch shooting aliens.
- The 3 month free membership to JDU includes hundreds of songs and that's a big improvement over the free month that they gave you in 2016.
- The phone controller implementation is still spotty at best. The accuracy just isn't there over using the Kinect.
- The girls get tired of the included songs pretty quick and want to download new songs from JDU. This is fine for 90 days, but after that I'm going to be pushing hard not to buy the $29 unlimited package.
As I said, my daughter has "dance parties" in the playroom with her friends for hours so that itself makes this game worth it. If you have a Kinect it's a no brainer. If you don't, you're going to have to be comfortable letting your kids dance around with your phone as they use them for controllers.
