About the Author
Patricia Callahan Walkenhorst, writer, genealogist and local historian, loves to learn about history, especially when it is written by the people who lived it. Her prize-winning family history book, The Callahans of Kansas; her Irish Settlers of Kansas: Memories of the Pioneer Life, selected as one of the 150 best Kansas Books for the Kansas Sesquicentennial; her Kansas: the Early years contribution to University of Notre Dame Press's Enclyclopedia of the Irish in America; and her Be Careful Climbing your Family Tree article for Family History Magazine have kept her busy recording Kansas history. Pat has won Heart of America and Jackson County, Missouri Genealogical Societies book awards and six awards by Ozarks Creative Writers and Missouri Writers Guild. She has been a columnist for a South Carolina newspaper, and has published poems and articles in many newspapers, magazines and anthologies. Now she happily leaps a century ahead, to a period in our history just as interesting and compelling: the magical era following World War II and before the troubled 1960s. Pat lives in Blue Springs, Missouri. She is he widow of Terry E. Walkenhorst and has two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
