Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—Sixth-grader Jake Mathews's popularity has gone from a rank of 10 to a low of three, when he is forced to move from Flordia to Maryland. Jake's "Awesomeness" is put to the test in his new town as he struggles to make friends and fit in; resulting in his previously unshakeable confidence beginning to crumble. Marcionette, a sixth grader himself, creates a humorous character who takes readers on an enjoyable journey as he triumphs over a bully, fights with his explosive older sister, attempts to climb back to the top of the social ladder, and finds a group of friends he calls the "misfit toys". At times, Jake's arrogance can be overwhelming, but readers will see through it and realize it is simply a yearning to be accepted. Just Jake is filled with doodles, cut out photos, rules of Awesomeness, and clever "Kid Cards." Fans of Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" (Abrams) and Rachel Renée Russell's "Dork Diaries"(S & S) will enjoy this title.—Megan McGinnis, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

This is next only to Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Tales of a Part Time Indian. It is laugh out loud funny. When Jake met the knitting boy I could not stop laughing. This is shockingly well-written. I do not care who you are. Seriously, buy this book. I do not know Jake, I live in Newfoundland , Canada, but Bravo! I cannot wait for the next book. Are you sure you are 13? You must have truly amazing parents. What a lucky boy to have a sister who is such a "worthy nemesis". Good for you! I hope you sell a million copies!

I am not a youngster myself but read this book after seeing Jake's interview on CBS news....I was reviewing to make
sure it was good for my niece's 10 year old son, I ended up reading cover to cover and laughing a little myself!
Definitely recommend for any age!

I saw this advertised on national news and was impressed with the kid author's moxy to pick up the phone and call publisher after publisher for his manuscript! So, I bought it for my 13-year-old grandson whose family relocates every couple of years, because of my son's job. I previewed the book before mailing to them, as I didn't want to send anything offensive. Some of the illustrations could be considered edgy (but then I'm an old fuddy-duddy), but the writing itself is amazing - funny, touching, insightful - particularly for an author so young. It was entertaining to say the least. Good job, Jake.

I saw the network news on this book, as I prepared to take my own freshly published memoir to a 5th grade class for a talk. I got four copies to take along. To show this beautiful middle schooler's creation to the classes was proof. Life worth living is for stories worth telling. Special hats off to the illustrator, adds an extra special something. Just Jake, a book targeted to kid’s ages 8 to 14, has hit the bull’s-eye. Just Jake is a novel based on true experiences. The author, Jake Marcionette, knows about moving around and trying to stay in touch with school. He has moved many times in his thirteen year life, living in such places as Singapore, New York, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida. But don’t let that fool you into thinking he is just your standard genius. Jake is a normal kid. He likes to watch baseball and plays lacrosse and basketball. Jake understands what it is like to try to fit in. He can relate to what you or your child faces at school.
Just Jake is a book that will entertain your kids. Jake tells about the kids he encounters at school and how he deals with them. In the book he makes kid cards (kind of like baseball cards with kids instead of players) that describe the people he meets. Unfortunately the cards fall into the wrong hands and get him in a lot of trouble. I could not unglue my eyes from the book to find out how Jake gets out of this dilemma and others including his sister, Alexis. By the way, I am a 13 year old reader who has met the real life Jake.

I just 5 stars simply because my children loved it. We saw a report on a television show where Jake was being interviewed on. The we went straight to Amazon and made the purchase. Now my children can't wait for more books. Jake is an inspiration to my children. They want to be a young author like Jake.

We bought this for our nine year old daughter because she likes to write stories and we wanted to show her a published child. Our 11 year old son read it also. Just Jake didn't become either of their favorite book but they both read it all of the way through and shared several funny parts with me.
