Vera hadn't been home since her mother, Daphne, kicked her out when she was 17 years old. There was no love lost between Vera and Daphne, which was why Vera was so surprised when her dying mother called her to come home to prepare the house for sale after her imminent death. Immediately upon her arrival, she faced animosity from her neighbors and strange happenings in the house. The secret history of the house still has a hold on Vera.

WHAT I LIKED: The book took a quick turn to the sinister, with several surprise twists. Some aspects were pretty predictable, but others caused me to audibly gasp. The toggling between past and present kept the story moving and engaging. Even though it's classified as a horror novel, I didn't find it too terribly gruesome.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Even though the ending wasn't very contrived, I was a little disappointed with the revelations of the mystery. It was obviously an allegory of the effects of domestic violence on the psyche of a child, but I wish that it had been a bit more satisfying.

This was a story about child abuse wrapped in horror with a happy ending. The horror aspect of this story was deliciously creepy and was a by-product of the abuse of Vera by her parents, Francis and Daphne, and by other actions on their part. The child abuse was not easy to read, but it needed to be explored to fully explain what was happening in the story and to develop the horror aspect. Daphne's abuse was overt: cruel, critical and jealousy-driven. Francis's abuse was more his teaching Vera the wrong things. He was a serial killer and set a vicious and violent example. He explained to Vera he was just trying to help his victims. As a young girl, she misunderstood that “help” as a positive thing. I think she would have followed in Francis’s footsteps had she not been stopped by his confession to his crimes and hers. I’m wondering if Frances left the peephole to the basement in Vera’s bedroom on purpose. In any event, Vera's life was difficult, and she grew up wrong and confused and wanting to be loved. She only wanted a sister or a friend who would support and help her. The good news is that she found that in this story. I have to say that I enjoyed this book for its strangeness. All in all, it’s a fantastic book.

It definitely tumbles headlong into paranormal, so if that’s not your bag then this isn’t the horror book for you. I really thought this book would be scary, and the first couple of chapters were. But after that, I was just really distracted by all the plot holes! I'm surprised that a book of this caliber, from an author this good, and a publishing company this big, that so many plot holes got by the editing process.

Unless the protagonist is losing her mind from the moment she enters the home, there are many, many places in this book that just don't make sense.

I don't think this was a bad book, but maybe it wasn't for me? I pre-ordered it because i was enthralled by the description, but I really didn't find that it checked all my boxes. The first half started to feel scary, but overall didn't have that edge-of-my-seat thriller feeling I've gotten from other books. I LOVE the idea of psychologically diving into the life of a serial killer, but the tangible supernatural part of the twist sort of lost me. I was a major major fan of The Haunting of Hill House / Bly Manor - but this fell short for me, personally. I think I would have wanted more of Frances and Daphne to help tie it together.

I stopped reading this book at page 128 and skipped to the end as I gave up. It wasn’t the story I thought it was from the blurb - it was more paranormal then crime thriller and every chapter the character was basically cleaning/tidying rooms which got boring and the book focused a lot on a mum and daughters abusive and dysfunctional relationship (annoying) then her dad the serial killer.

I think it had potential as it was creepy at points , the parts of the story I like best were the chapters set in the past when she was a child and interactions the main character has with her dad and how she is treated by the local community as I found this realistic. I also loved that the author added a domestic violence helpline in her acknowledgements.

First off I love the idea of the POV of a serial killers daughter. It could have been such an interesting perspective to read! But I actually wanted to give up after the first few chapters already. It was soooo slow and boring! Nothing really happened! Almost no dialogue, not much back story, no character explanation! In general no interesting characters, you can’t relate to none of them! Then I thought ok I give it a shot bc a lot of ppl say it’ll get twisted and more action later on but nope!! It turned to a complete weird non realistic situation, supernatural or haunted but way off, not in a good way. And then it was over! Sorry but I didn’t like it at all!
